Rowland (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage standalone science fiction technothriller, this one set a couple of centuries in the future, where damage to the Earth means that everyone is looking towards the oceans for their salvation, and plucky researchers attempt to perfect thus-far dangerously experimental tech that will enable humans to breathe underwater, despite the terrible cost of continuing to test it, even as nefarious forces seek to exploit the invention for their own purposes, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.

This was originally published in 1975 by Robert Hale as part of their Hale SF line using the pseudonym Mark Suffling.

Time is running out…

2275. Earth’s natural resources are almost exhausted.

Doctor Paul Dexter and Professor Quantock are attempting to perfect the gillpack, a method which will enable men to take oxygen into the bloodstream directly from the sea instead of needing apparatus for breathing underwater. So far their experiments have proved disastrous and two issues need to be faced: the colossal number of casualties incurred in the name of science and the prospect of an even larger scale experiment to bring an end to the matter once and for all.

Who will be recruited to die?

The strain soon infiltrates the entire organisation behind the experiments and one senior member goes to lethal lengths to prove that the experiment is not entirely doomed.

Has one man just signed his own death warrant?

In the midst of time restraints and suspicions surrounding devotion to their cause, they are harried by Javier Zelig, a minister of the Superior Committee who is intent upon securing world power and planning to use the invention for more sinister operations.

Dexter is an idealist, and Quantock is aware that sea farming and Marine Agriculture are the only means of saving the world from certain extinction. They work tirelessly to achieve their ends despite increasing daunting restrictions.

What follows is a race against time, against the evil greed of Man…
