Arriving in a town and declaring that you want to kill the most powerful rancher in the valley is one way to guarantee trouble.

The brave and unflappable Hodge Malone arrives in Clearwater Valley seeking a homestead, after years of scraping by merely to stay alive.

He buys the Slash 8 ranch from under the nose of the infamous land owner Fiddle-Back Rivers, who wanted it to add to his own empire.

As a result, it’s not long before Malone finds himself on the wrong side of almost everyone in town.

Unable to find common ground with the valley’s nesters, and unwilling to cosy up to the ranchers and gun hands who terrorise them, Malone finds himself very much alone, and with a price on his head.

He could leave, but something – or someone – compels him to stay.

It soon becomes clear that to maintain his hold on the Slash 8 ranch, and more importantly his life, Malone will need the luck of the devil, and a gun hand quicker than lightning.
