Kobo H2O Edition 2 requires OEM USB cable???

I got a Aura H20 Edition 2 a few weeks ago, and had trouble with the USB connection to (at least) Windows 10 and Windows 7 machines.

I picked up a replacement and discovered that it behaves the same way.

Then I realized I had been using a generic USB cable with it, so I decided to try the cable that shipped with the unit. To my shock, the connection problems seem to have gone away (hard to be positive, since they were intermittent).

Has anyone else has this experience with the H2O Edition 2?

I also have an H2O Edition 1, and it doesn't care what cable I use. I wonder why the Edition 2 is so picky.

I have this problem periodically with my Kindle. And if I remember correctly, some cables can only be used for charging. Does your generic cable transfer data using a different device?

The other cable I was using works just fine with my Edition 1 H2O. That's why it took me so long to think of this as a possible source of the problem with the Edition 2 unit.

I've successfully used a few different cables with my H2O Edition 2.

I have noticed that it only likes one of the USB ports on my laptop (the one which allows charging when the laptop is powered off). I should check to see if there are some power saving settings or similar applied to the other ports but laziness has prevented me so far.

I have gone through quite a few USB cables with micro-B connectors and they tend to be flaky. I've found a few that work reliably with all my devices and stick with those. I've had cables that only worked with a Samsung phone, a Kobo, a Nexus tablet or a Kindle. Some that worked with all my devices but either were unreliable on the initial connection or dropped the connection while transferring files and others that only worked when the moon was in the right phase.

I have one that wouldn't charge my little Samsung phone the other day but charged my 9.7 tab A just fine. Not sure if it was the cable, the phone or as you said the moon.

I have the opposite problem. Some of my Kobo devices don't connect if they are plugged into the port that allows charging. And the ones that do work take a lot longer to see it than the "normal" ports.
