“title has no available formats"

Calibre 3.8.0.
Symptom : After new install, and selecting an existing calibre library folder, and selecting an ePub file to view, receive error message : “title has no available formats.”
Most of the files in the library are unreadable.
Yet, these epub files can be read by any other ePub reader.

Why can't it recognize an ePub file as an ePub format?

What is the solution?

Note: The files are compressed as RAR files.

In calibre you do not select epub files to view. You select books to view. And that error message means the book has no epub format, not that calibre could not read the epub file.

And just FYI EPUB files cannot be RAR compressed.

Thank you.
After further investigation, it turns out that the decompressed library included duplicate folders, which the book importer flagged.
I mistakenly told it to skip the duplicates - which contained the epub files.
I re-imported everything, and all books now appear.
