I've just noticed that on the kobo web site (australia), under My Account popup menu there is a new link - My Subscriptions.

Just curious if we are going to have Plus subscription.

I think it's for Audiobooks. I don't remember if I had them (audiobooks) before. Just noticed today.

Has anyone tried a Kobo audiobook yet? Can you download the file to play on an ordinary MP3 player, or do you need a device that can run the Kobo app?

The FAQ has:
  • on kobo.com
  • in Kobo Desktop
  • in the Kobo App for Windows or BlackBerry
  • on Kobo eReaders
  • on Kobo Arc 7, 7HD or 10HD tablets

So it looks like you can't play it on an ordinary MP3 player. The real question to me us how to play then on my eReaders?

That's the list of devices/apps they can't be played on. From the website it seems like an Android or Apple phone/tablet (but not a Kobo tablet!) is needed to run the Kobo app. But is the Kobo app really needed to play the audiobook, or just to download it?

I just tried. Got a free book. It seems they are just MP3s. At least for the book I downloaded. With an Android device it is trivial to pull them out of the kobobooks app. They don't give them the extension .mp3, I added it back on and stuck it in my music folder and it played fine in the music app I use. It seems like you just need the app to download.

Thanks, that is good to know.

Hopefully they will update the desktop app too, to cater for those who don't have an Android or Apple device. Or better yet, allow a direct download from the wesite.
