Private Satellite by the late English author John Burke (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE), a prolific pseudonymous multi-genre author and early science fiction fandom member, & edited by British author Philip Harbottle (ISFDB, SFE), is a collection of seven of his vintage golden age science fiction stories, apparently with a psychological thriller theme of exploring unsettling future versions of humanity, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.
Some of these were originally credited as by Jonathan Burke and J. F. Burke when they were published during the 1950s. If you're interested, The Telegraph had a pretty nice retrospective of his work and considered him a forgotten author well worth being rediscovered. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description Private Satellite comprises seven classic science fiction short stories in a collection never before seen in ebook format. In the 22nd Century, a musical genius, Sudermark, known throughout the Solar System finds recluse on his own private satellite, living away from the prying eyes of society. But that is about to change… A Big Brother-style, all-seeing ‘Eye’ has invaded his idyllic life. The worlds beyond his reach are filled with terror. After a Second Solar War, Earth has been decimated and left behind as a relic of the ancient past. Mars is breeding a new, progressive society, but tensions are rising… The human race craves a return to its former glory – and in Sudermark and his music, they see their only salvation. But will he join them? In another gripping story, The Adjusters we see a potential future filled with Alternative Realities, as the Ministry of Adjustment seeks to rewrite both past and present. But the consequences are horrific: with the task of ‘rubbing out the past’s mistakes’, entire generations can vanish from existence in a heartbeat. Private Satellite collects these prolific and haunting stories and more for the first time ever. A classic collection from a renowned author of the genre.
