I/O Error sending only one book to Sony PRS950

Hello!
I've got a problem with just one book.

calibre, version 2.9.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

[Errno 5] Input/output error: '/Volumes/Untitled/AuthorLN, AuthorFN/Title of Book - AuthorFN AuthorLN/Series'

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 87, in run
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 583, in _upload_books
File "site-packages/calibre/devices/usbms/driver.py", line 267, in upload_books
File "site-packages/calibre/devices/usbms/device.py", line 1073, in create_upload_path
File "lib/python2.7/os.py", line 157, in makedirs
OSError: [Errno 5] Input/output error: '/Volumes/Untitled/AuthorLN, AuthorFN/Title of Book - AuthorFN AuthorLN/Series'

I changed the name of the author, book title, and series in the error message because I don't think that's the relevant part. The other two books in the series were sent to the reader without any problem.

Non-computer coder here, eyes gloss over when I try to read John S's how to use calibre book/guide or the online Calibre manual with all the coding info, so I can't DIY this one. I don't have a clue about Sigil or rooting or whatever all that geeky stuff is. I have basic calibre plug-ins for calibre for deDRM and finding book covers or duplicates, nothing exciting, and I rarely use those. My Sony reader was just reset to factory settings, so it's not special.

I am using Mac OS X 10.10.5 on a 2011 MacBookAir, Calibre 2.9.0 (downloaded 3.6.0 but I didn't like it at first pass, so went back to the old one), Sony Reader PRS950 with the original Sony USB cable using the right USB port on my computer because the reader doesn't seem to like the left side port much.

This is a DRM-free book, purchased from the publisher directly, no adobe digital editions involved. I've had a couple hundred books from this publisher that loaded onto the reader without errors.

I can open this book in calibre's reader on my MacBookAir and the PDF opens in Preview.

I redownloaded the book in all the epub, PDF, and mobi formats. I tried converting each to epub after the original downloaded epub and pdf formats gave the same error.

Other books load okay. In this session, I'd done a hard hard reset on the reader for other reasons, then loaded about 700 books to main, card A, and card B. This is the only one that would not go to the reader. It was the third time I'd tried to get this book, the 2nd of a 3 book series, onto the reader.

I've had occasional books in the past that I had to choose an alternate location when they did not load to my first choice spot, or I've had to send it one book at a time if it seemed like a large file was causing trouble (this session included 3 books that were ~40-45MB each, no problem), or I've done epub->epub conversion to get a file that will communicate to the device.

None of this is working for this book.

Help!

An I/O error means there was an error writing data to the disk of the reader. That indicates your reader is failing. You can try reformatting the disks (or doing a hard reset). Or sending the book to a different card. THere is nothing in calibre itself that you can doa bout I/O errors.

I did a hard reset. Same error. I tried the main memory, card A, and card B.
Why would only this one book be a problem and not the other ~700 I loaded in the same day?

Because it is being written to a part of the disk that is failing. Books are transferre to readers using simply system calls to copy files. The contents of the books themselves are irrelevant to this operation.

Thank you for explaining that.

I'm still not sure why it affects both of the memory cards and the main memory, with only this particular book and not the hundreds of other books and pictures that I loaded and deleted from the reader. Must have something to do with the reader's CPU or whatever makes the directory in the system.

I'll give up on this book. Thanks again!

Maybe it's something to do with how you are sending the book to the 950. You don't need to send books to the 950 in subdirectories. These subdirectires never get deleted when you delete the books in them so what you do is end up with many subdirectories with nothing in them. You should fix your Calibre configuration so it doesn't send to a subdirectory that's created on send. Maybe that's your problem with this eBook.

As to not updating your version of Calibre, you'll miss out on any bug fixes and new features. So I think its a good idea to install the current version and just don't look back.
