Kindle books app
The Kindle books app is the slowest turtle on the planet. Is it because I have a huge library? I find it to be slower than molasses on the Fire HD 6, Fire HD 8 (2015 edition) and even on my Nexus 7 (2013 edition). Would it be just as slow on every tablet? It's horrible!
Plus mine decided, this morning, to add 2 books I opened to my currently reading on goodreads. Obviously I need to change a setting. I open many, many books, that doesn't mean I am reading them. How annoying! Are the newer Fires any faster at opening the Kindle app, downloading books, opening books, etc? (Somehow, I doubt it). I find it ridiculous that it takes five or more minutes of waiting, and often crashing back to the home screen, to finally get the app to start working, on a Fire of all things, that one might think was designed to work with the app!!! |

Let me check my old fire.
I just tapped on a book and it opened with no problems. You also appeared to have fixed my problem. It wasn't wanting to download from the carousel. Last edited by Cinisajoy; 07-17-2017 at 11:13 AM. |

Two things you might do. Check for updates. Reboot the device,

That is a large number, though I have more (over 12,000). I will try rebooting. Funny thing is, I took a 2012 Fire HD (running android via n2a) and the kindle books app was a lot faster on that.

Hmmm,
Did you just get the fire or were the books already on it? On the downloading this morning, some went fast and some went slow. |

The Kindle app on my HD6 is slow. It is even slower on my Moto G (1st gen). But both of these are 3-4 years old, and have only 1GB RAM. It's my impression that they are significantly slower running the current software than they were 3 years ago. That's pretty much to be expected and I would not really have it any other way, since the features they have added are of value to me. One a book is open, I would say it is acceptable performance. At the same time I have other devices I prefer to use, largely because the performance is better.
My Fire Phone has 2GB RAM but they have not updated the Kindle app for 3 years so while it is not particularly slow, it doesn't have enhanced typography and associated features that I have come to expect, so I don't read with it very much (I will be getting an iPhone very soon, and consider that will become my 'primary' reading device in short order). I just bought (not yet arrived) a new Fire HD 8 for $49.99 on Prime Day. I got Punch Red, because that is obviously the fastest color one can get. It has 1.5GB RAM. I certainly expect it to be significantly faster, and to have better power management. If this pans out, I think it will make it into my reading device rotation. The iOS app is generally very snappy by comparison. But of course these devices cost more. Last edited by tomsem; 07-17-2017 at 06:21 PM. |

Yes I was wondering if the kindle app would be faster on an ipad mini. I've never had an i-device. Maybe a second hand ipad mini is in my future.
Let us know if the new Fire 8 is any faster with the books app. (I'd have gotten that color, too!) |

It was gathering dust due to being painfully slow in everything. I haven't reloaded much on it, just the few apps I'm likely to use and a dozen books. It's the best screen I have so I wanted to be able to use it for reading. The kindle app loads a book more than quick enough now. |

Slow as turtles. One lady owns a KF6 with over 13,000 books and it refuses to open anything. She has to use the Android app on her Nexus 7 which for me is super slow. My KF6 is slow but gets faster after awhile.
My Fire Phone works fine however. Sent from my Nexus 7 |

Well the new HD 8 I bought on Prime Day performs much better than the HD 6 (both are running same Fire OS version). And sync seems more reliable. I have about 2000 books in my library and that doesn't seem to push things, adding and removing items from collections is no longer painfully slow. It is nice to have louder speakers, dual band WiFi, and SD expansion.
I have not used it long enough to see how much better power management is. It seems to charge as slowly as the HD 6, and (unfairly compared to my iPad, which cost 20x more) drains quickly. It drained about %15 overnight in sleep mode (but there was a system update). How do they get 12 hours of 'mixed usage'? But I have to think it is hours better than HD6 ever was. For $50, not much to regret. |

Well, HD 8 is quite a bit better at power management than my HD 6 is (or has become). And charging it doesn't take as long as I first thought.
When did Amazon add pop-up footnotes? Pleasantly surprised about that, given I did not use my HD 6 at all for many months. I see the iOS and Android apps have them now as well. I cannot find any reference to it any of the respective release notes. Perhaps it arrived with the 'left-aligned' option? |

Interestingly, the Kindle app is much faster on my Alcatel Pop 4 Plus phone. So maybe the newer the device, the better the app works!
