Boystown: Three Nick Nowak Mysteries by Marshall Thornton (Screenwriting Magazine column), a Lambda Literary Award-winning novelist and screenwriter, is the 1st book in his Boystown series of gritty mysteries with m/m romantic elements set in 1980s Chicago starring an ex-cop turned hard-boiled PI, this installment comprising 3 novella-length crime-solving adventure cases with a side of self-discovery relationship drama, free for a limited time courtesy of the author himself.

This was originally published in 2011 by now-defunct LGBT specialty publisher Torquere Press, and was a finalist for the 2012 Lambda Literary Awards in the Gay Mystery category. NB: this has a cover which may be considered NSFW for some workplaces, due to mild artistic nudity (non-explicit), and apparently you should expect them to have the same level of violence, swearing, and sexual content as any other gritty hard-boiled PI work.

Currently free (and DRM-free) @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

Haunted by his abrupt departure from the Chicago Police Department and the end of his relationship with librarian Daniel Laverty, Nick Nowak is a beat cop-turned-dogged private investigator. In this first book of the best-selling series, Nick works through three cases: a seemingly simple missing persons search, an arson investigation, and a suicide that turns out to be anything but. While working the cases, Nick moves through a series of casual relationships until he meets homicide detective Bert Harker and begins a tentative relationship.

The Boystown Mysteries are 18+ for gay sexual content, language and violence.

I bought the book taking the gamble on the gritty, hard-boiled aspects outweighing the romance aspects. I was at work, so I just blasted past the screen as quickly as I could.

Later, when I got home and fired up Kindle for PC, I was like "What is that and when did I buy it?"

I will say though, the cover doesn't seem any worse than the cover of my old Atlas Shrugged paperback.
