Factory restore Kindle 1st Gen

My Kindle 1st Generation is stuck in a rebooting loop and I've tried everything I can think of to get it working again, but I haven't had any luck. The last thing I can think of to try is to factory reset the Kindle, but I've forgotten the way to do it. I know that there are a number of buttons you have to press during reset, but I've forgotten what they are. I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to factory restore the Kindle.

I don't remember if the K1 already behaved that way, but try hard-rebooting, and then holding the [HOME] button early in the boot process. (Err, there's a [HOME] button on the K1? right? ).

It worked. I reset the Kindle and pressed home, and it brought me to the menu screen where it allowed me to select "firmware reset." Hopefully this will fix my problem. Thanks for the help.

Update: I think it fixed the problem. The Kindle was restored to factory settings, and seems to work perfectly.

That didn't work for me, but I was encouraged that something would work.

This worked on my Kindle 1st Generation:

Home
Menu
Settings
Restart
PRESS HOME BUTTON IMMEDIATELY UPON RESTART HOLDING DOWN THE BUTTON CONTINUOUSLY
Then you get the option "Firmware reset" that displays.

After that firmware reset, the option to "Unpdate Your Kindle" becomes available (grayed out before), which I also did.

@Nella Todd: That's roughly what I meant by my answer in #2, except with a hard-reboot instead of a soft one, since the OP was stuck in a boot-loop .

Thanks for your response. I'm glad it worked for you. I had called 3 advanced Kindle specialiss at Amazon, and not one of them could get me to do a hard reset. I even followed your instructions while reading it to one of the more kindly Kindle specialists and could not do a hard reset. The missing word was that I had to select "Restart" where I guess that was critical. In any case I came back to your abbreviated explanation and figured it out.

I was so delighted at finally achieving a hard reset.

However it did not solve my problem. I cannot access the web using "Experimental".

Can you access the web, say, get weather with 3G?

That depends, all 3G is proxied (controlled) by Amazon.

What model, what firmware version?
Amazon policy has varied over the years.

I have two devices identical, although purchased separately refurbished
perhaps 2 yrs ago, and have the same specs:

Models: Original 1st Generation, Model No D00111
Version Kindle 1.2 (299870016)
Modem Firmware MEUSP16

With 3G both can receive newspaper subscription deliveries,
purchase Amz books, and access and download from
Content Manager.

Neither can access weather underground as originally bookmarked in the device, where that had been possible approx a year ago.
3G network is Sprint. Both devices are in range of strong (5 bar signal) with Sprint, and as a separate (unassociated) fact, both users have Sprint phone service which works well.

Numerous calls to advanced Kindle specialists are no help.

Thanks for any trouble-shooting tips or info on proxie decisions made by Amazon.

weather underground urls changed about a year ago.
try the one I posted above - it still works on my DX.

I tried your web address above.
"Submit" gives a blank web address field, and

When I do submit, my Kindle Gen1 has this little icon that spins at 0% for some time, and then the usual error message pops:

Basic Web is unable to connect at this
time. Please try again later.

Since that is the only response I get, no matter what address I use, I wonder if the url field is disabled.

This was exactly the same response before and after the factory reset/upgrade

I tried enabling JavaScript. Same response.

Are you the one that put the old bookmark on the device?
Was that bookmark working for you back then?

Well these two 1st Gen Kindles are identical,
but only one user regularly used the weather via 3G access.

(The other user was not interested, so unknown if weather
was accessible on the 2nd 1st Gen Kindle.)

And yes, the weather bookmark was regularly used, by user#1;
the weather bookmark was originally installed with
the Kindle 1st Generation default everything --
the bookmark came with the Kindle.

At this point both users report that
neither the default originally installed weather bookmark
nor classic.wunderground.com
work. As do NOT any other URL, even amazon.com,
using the experimental browser.

But these following are all functional, to my complete mystification:
"Shop in Kindle Store"
"Sync & Check for Items"
"Content Manager"

Amazon may have stopped supporting 3G on the K1 model.
It wasn't a "forever" sort of deal in the first place and contracts with communications companies don't last forever either.

So just settle for using Wifi.
