Cool Free (Kindle) Strange Company by Robert J. Conley [Cherokee US Civil War Western]

Strange Company by the late Cherokee author Robert J. Conley (Wikipedia, obituary at Cherokee Phoenix), a recipient of multiple literary as well as genre awards including the Golden Spur and the WWA's Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Contribution, is his western historical action adventure novel starring a part-Cherokee man and his soon-to-be friend, who apparently meet up on opposite sides of the US Civil War and find common cause against a sadistic Confederate captain who captures and torments them both, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint.

This was originally published in 1991 by Pocket Books and apparently incorporates some real history into it (more than usual for the genre, at least), with a brief introductory author's note about certain historical figures who make an appearance.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

We've previously received the sequel to this novel as a freebie: Borderline, which apparently follows up directly upon the story in this one.

Description
The fight is on…

When Dhu Walker, an educated, half Cherokee Indian, is separated from his brigade at the battle of Pea Ridge, he sees a chance to escape his Confederate tormentors.

On the run, he meets Ben Franklin Lacey, a simple farm boy from Iowa. In the Union blue himself, Ben eyes Dhu’s uniform and the colour of his skin with mistrust.

Soon they find a common enemy in Confederate Captain, Gordon Early - better known as ‘Old Harm’ because of his streak of sadism.

Captured by ‘Old Harm’ and the remains of his company, Dhu and Ben must find a way to break free from the torture that surely awaits them.

In a divided land, can Dhu and Ben overcome the odds and exact a deserved revenge?
