Kobo H20
I have a Kobo H2o and recently updated to the newest version of the software. I can connect the device to my computer but for some reason I cannot attach my device to Calibre. I am getting this error message:

calibre, version 2.21.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

file is encrypted or is not a database

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 503, in _books
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 1680, in books
DatabaseError: file is encrypted or is not a database

Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

I thought I had it solved by upgrading the software. Now I am getting this error:

calibre, version 3.3.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

'KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED' object has no attribute 'OPT_MODIFY_CSS'

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 88, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 592, in _upload_books
File "calibre_plugins.kobotouch_extended.device.driver" , line 247, in upload_books
AttributeError: 'KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED' object has no attribute 'OPT_MODIFY_CSS'

Can anyone help?

Your version of Calibre is tooo old. Kobo changed an option on the database which in turn needed a change in the Kobo device driver.

That version of Calibre is ancient - over 2 years old. Kobo made some changes to their database handling last year I think you may need to upgrade Calibre to something newer.

ETA: Too late, ninja'd again!

ETA2: Update your KoboTouchExtended plugin as well.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I did update Calibre and can now sideload.

Now I see another issue. When I open a book and go into the fonts there is no more Advanced tab. Is that because of the update?

Did you reapply the patches with the patches for the version firmware you are running? Did you reinstall any custom hyphenation dictionaries or dictionaries?

I didn't have any custom hyphenation or dictionaries. The only thing I had were custom fonts.

Can you recommend the patches I should apply?

If this hasn't gone away by now, you need to reset the configuration for the driver. To do this, open the calibre configuration directory and delete the file "device_drivers_KOBOTOUCHEXTENDED.py".

I finally figured that out and applied the patch to both devices. One odd thing, same versions of the upgrade and and patch to both devices but when I open the same book on each one displays properly and the other doesn't.

One book has the book title at the top with a footer and the other doesn't. Can't figure that one out, tried for about 45 minutes and gave up.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate everyone that took the time to respond and jig my memory. It was a long time ago that I patched the original Kobo.

The header at the top means that the book is in kepub format and not epub; the two formats use different rendering engines.
