Star Quest by Fenton Brockley, a pseudonym for British author Donald S. Rowland (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage science fiction novel which is a space adventure with investigative mystery elements, involving a mission to rescue an exploring starship gone unexpectedly incommunicado and disappeared, and a Lieutenant looking for his vanished crewman brother, trying to find answers to a mystery which may be rooted in sabotage and misdeeds, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.
This was originally published in 1974 by Robert Hale. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description While six months into a mission, Starship Explorer has suddenly ceased to transmit routine course and position reports. What could possibly have caused this baffling silence? Lieut. Commander Hartley Regan knew the procedure aboard Explorer. If a malfunction had developed it would have been fixed within a short time. If it couldn’t be fixed inside thirty-six hours, then it could never be fixed. But Explorer is thirty-six hours overdue as of now. A second starship, Retriever, being commissioned to join Explorer, was immediately ordered out to search for the missing ship, and Hartley Regan was the Third Officer in the crew. Lieutenant Nestor, a colleague of Regan, needs answers. His brother was aboard the Explorer… The rescue mission promises to be eventful, with the question of the missing Explorer looming in the forefront of all minds. When Retriever reached the spot where Explorer disappeared a number of nagging questions were quickly answered. But it remains for Regan to get the remaining answers to the mystery, and he needs all his courage and determination to do so. With sabotage and betrayal along the way, will Regan be able to discover the truth behind the Explorer’s mysterious disappearance? Or will he fall foul to the misdeeds of those around him? |

Well...."will Regan be able to discover the truth behind the Explorer’s mysterious disappearance? Or will he fall foul to the misdeeds of those around him?"
My guess is he'll fall foul! |
