Sony PRS-505 Locking Up

Hi All,

Been having great fun with the reader and very amazed at how good it is.

Currently have 186 books on the internal memory and plugged in 8 GB card.

Had a problem this morning after loading up a number of novels. The unit totally locked up.

I tried the re set button on the back and it did not work.

By the time I got to the office some 20 minutes later the screen was still on and nothing worked. So my Son held the on/off button on the top and the thing re set itself.

Later this morning after looking at Calibre and downloading the BBC news I tried to go into the news and the unit just re set itself every time, so I deleted the file and all seems OK.

Just thought it would be useful info for other users.

Best regards

Chris

Yes, the reset button actually turns the device off, so you need to toggle the power switch to turn it on again.

Hi igorsk,

The re set button did nothing! Basically the screen stayed on permanently and no buttons would work. It was only when we held the toggle on/off button that it managed to re set itself!

Regards

I had a similar issue today myself, I opened a large book and it formatted it then rest, then switched off, it wouldn't go back on again, until i removed the MS and then it was fine, re-inserted MS and all is well so far. I do believe there is a known bug about resetting on large files......not sure I did respond in a thread earlier about the same issue I had.

Im just keeping an eye on it, gadgets can sometimes be temperamental. I am removing my MS for now and see if it happens again without it.

Since the E-Ink screen does not need electricity to keep the picture, the opposite is also true: it needs electricity to change the picture (including clearing the screen). That's why when you press reset and the device turns off the screen stays as is.

Hi babyd,

I have one book which is from a converted pdf. The file is 143.8mb in Calibre and about 100mb on the card I have plugged in. Approx 1400 pages mostly of rubbish!

Seems to open and scroll OK!

Will probably be deleting that one as it is almost unreadable due to conversion not really making a lot of sense. Probably too many pics as it is a Photoshop CS3 training book.

Regards

Hi igorsk,

Many thanks for that, it makes a little more sense if that is the case.

Best regards

Well it just did an odd thing again.......I was just starting a book, all was fine, page turns okay, then on page 7 I decide I want to increase font size, so I press zoom once, nothing happens, but I also can't turn page any more. When I press page turns or zoom I get the no entry symbol on the bottom bar.
I can go back to the menu etc, but if I go back to the same book its still stuck on page 7.
If I switch off by top button and back on again, still stuck on page 7 of the book.....so I try switching off via settings, when I switch back on again it reloads the long way as I have done a full switch off and the book is now fine, but my collections have gone. I try to resize font again in same book, and its fine. So it seems to be an inconsistent glitch. it has done this about three times now on different books.

Should I exchange it?

Going by my own experience, it's not a glitch if the book is on your memory card and in a format other than sony's own. When you format a book, it only formats in one size. If you change size while reading, the reader has to reformat the whole book again into the new size. While that is happening, you get the 'no entry' signal and just have to patiently wait for it to happen. Turning it on/off etc is just going to cause probs which might be why your collections were affected. Don't know for sure since I've always done the patient waiting thing.
Of course, if I'm wrong, then I've been putting up with a glitch forever LOL

Hi babyd,

One of the things I have noticed is that if you press a button and don't give it time to sort itself out then pressing another can cause problems. The bit that seems to be missing is some kind of indication that it is still working.

Unless others have a better answer that is my take on it.

Regards

Hi babyd,

Amandajarrett is right. The large book I have on the memory card seems to take forever to re size and during that time, woe betide me if I press another button.

I think it is just about learning how this new technology works and living within the limitations. I am already getting slowly used to it.

Regards

Chris

Hope your right, though it did it one a 1500 page book and a 238 page one ! When it stuck the last two times it never showed as formatting, it just stuck on page turns and zoom.

Will try some more, if it happens again I will leave it be, though I did wait a while before....... the learning process continues LOL

Are you copying the books to the cards/device via the Sony Reader software, as if not, using that would allow the PC to do the formatting at that time, rather than the Reader having to do it later. (For .lrf books anyway - not sure about .pdf or .epub.)

That caught me a couple of times - now I look for the LED to light up (yellow) after a reset to show it's starting up - if not, I use the power switch & re-check, but without knowing that, the way the screen doesn't change on reset can be very confusing! :-)

Okay, after the last stick and reset I didn't bother adding my collections back in...............since then I have been whizzing through as many different books as possible and zooming to see if I can get it to do it again. So far I have tried about 50 books....not once has it done it again, whether its a sony freebie, a waterstones epub or my own books...........I tried both my memory sticks too and again,, nothing. So the only difference is when it happened before I had collections on there, now I don't !

All books were transferred using the sony software and collections were created in sony elibrary too..............

So could the collections be at fault? And would this means this unti is faulty as it won't function with collections properly and the collections vanish once the glitch happens........

I will add some collections back again to see if it does it again. if it does then it has to be the collections causing the glitch. I depend on them too and the unit should function normally wiht them.............

will try more experiments....
