I've been a lurker here on and off over the years, and probably will continue...but at least I'm registered for the potential of posting (beyond this one.)
My first foray into eBooks, was the REB1200. I had hoped when Gemstar acquired TV Guide, that it might bring subscriptions to the format and that device. But, they didn't. I did some fiddling around with getting my own content onto it, but that wasn't enough to hold my interest in keeping it, so sold it.... while others came up which much better solutions to getting content onto it, etc. Haven't kept up on what the state of the device is... Next up....Amazon comes out with this thing called Kindle.... I opted to wait until Kindle 2 came out, to make the re-entry... since then, I've acquired a number of other Kindle's....1st gen Paperwhite w/3G, 2nd gen Paperwhite - WiFi only, Voyage w/3G, Kindle DX Graphite. Along with various Kindle Fire's, starting with the first one, followed with getting a Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and then a Kindle Fire HDX (to replace my first Kindle Fire, when its battery ceased to be of much use...had thought of cracking it open to replace the battery, but then I lost it... but I've done a battery replacement for the Kindle DX...) Was going to wait until the next cycle to upgrade from from the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, but for some reason I caved and got the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (mainly because it was on sale for even less the 'at cost'.). Both HDX's are 2013 models. Didn't know until recently that there was a 2014 model... but had recently looked as I compare Amazon's latest models against the ones I own... Disappointed that none do 1080p or better... The HDX 8.9 has been the primary (or initial) device that I email content from Calibre to.... Though I find I prefer the e-ink readers to the tablets (as long as its not of fixed pages). But, the problem with the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX, aside from no WiFi, so can't email content directly to them...is the cumbersome use of a book light to reach at night. Plus my vision issues calling for larger fonts, a larger screen is desired.... So recently....or a few months ago....I snapped up a Kobo Aura One. Where I eventually started fiddling beyond its stock capabilities....until last week when it bricked, but eventually it did an online recovery and restored itself to factory. (didn't know it could do that, but nice that it did...) Reloaded it with my Calibre content, along with some more recent additions that I was about to add when it had bricked.... not sure how, but I had let it drain completely (need more charging cables...) and turning it on shortly after starting to charge it back to life might have something to ... Guess I'll stick to USB to add/manage content for now (even though I was looking at setting up a standalone calibre content server somewhere...) Had neglected to save my prior bookshelves before plugging it in the first time... Though this time around, I've gone with a finer structure....all computer related books in on a single shelf didn't really help with finding what I wanted....or filter out all the books that are of less importance now that I'm not working... (keep them around, other than because I paid for them, I run some of the services on my home systems.... such as a recent attempt at creating a custom ruleset for my sendmail setup.) Someday I'll get around to finishing the work I had started in updating my Samba servers and tweaking Spamassassin... (along with upgrading from CFEngine 3.5, to something that get's away from all the issues I've been having lately with cf_lock.tcdb....) Or upgrading the OS on just about all my home machines (or rebuilding some that are in that state....such as the machine I had swiped its powersupply fix a more important one, but haven't gotten around to putting in the replacement I got a couple days later....for a couple of years now.) TL;DR ... thought I'd finally register as I lurk about learning all that I can about my latest eReader, the Kobo Aura One. The Dreamer. |

Welcome. We have a Kobo forum. Oh and come down to the lounge sometime for fun and games or just to let off some steam. We even have a thread for that.
