Wow - The Amazon Vacuum Cleaner
I just published my first ebook on Amazon and iBooks.
I typed my name into Amazon and came up with THREE books. I self-published two paperbacks long ago. One is a pretty decent book (I think), but I did a horrible job on the other one. Yet someone's trying to sell a copy of the horrible book for $80. I also found the following: "Seabird monitoring at Aiktak Island, Aleutian Islands, Alaska in 1989" I worked in the Aleutian Islands for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service many years ago. I spent maybe one week on a really tiny island called Aiktak and probably typed up a brief report. It says "Out of Print," but how could this even be listed on Amazon? Scientific reports written for government agencies are in the public domain, so anyone could digitize it and sell it (or give it away for free), but if they're going to focus on a report as minor as this, then they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel. |

Amazon probably scraped a govt archive somewhere for a list of publications, and then added them all to their database.

OTOH, Amazon does occasionally scrub titles that are no longer available. I've been looking for a non-pirated edition of The Gospel of Judas of Keiroth for more than a decade. All I've ever found, are pirated editions from the mid-eighties. |

Oh and on the trademark violations, they may or may not give the author 24 hours to correct it. |

The reason for listing everything is to allow third-party sellers to offer copies for sale. It's not possible to sell a book on Amazon that's not in their database. I've bought amazingly obscure Egyptology texts on Amazon that haven't been in print for 100 years, but because Amazon knows about them, people with copies can sell them on Amazon.

Even without robots, vendors can list merchandise they have access to but not in stock. Then, when they receive an order, they buy it from the distributor and ship it out, often straight from the distributor. Amazon got their start that way. ![]() |

Amazon uses some weird database. I was once googling my father's name to see what would come up and he's listed as an author on Amazon. Looks like some old papers or reports he wrote for the State of Illionis when he worked in various prisons there in the late 1960's. None are available, of course. He died before Amazon even came into existence.
