Question Calibre doesn't always recognize Kobo Aura H2O memory card

Hello,

I'm using Calibre 2.85 64bit on Windows 7 64bit and Kobo Aura H2O Firmware 4.4.9344 with a 32GB Micro-SD-Card.

My problem is:
Card is recognized when I first connect Kobo to USB and then start Calibre. But card is not recognized when I first start Calibre and then connect Kobo, while Kobo main memory is still recognized.

Windows Explorer shows card and main memory correct, reading and writing works fine.

I tried to install Kobo Extented Driver and Tools to Callibre, but same problem.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

I have the same problem with various devices. Just restart Calibre and the memory card will show up.

@LucyOne
I know. But that's no good solution, i have many books and magazines in Calibre, and every restart takes much time. I would like to have a better solution...

@JWalkerMR: I believe what is happening is that Windows is taking longer to mount the external card than the internal storage. Calibre is detecting the device, but the card isn't ready so calibre doesn't see it. When you connect the device when calibre isn't running, the main storage and the card are ready by the time calibre is started and sees the device.

I'm not sure if there is a better solution than connecting the device before starting calibre. Otherwise, there would need to be more delay added to detect the card. I'm not sure if that is a good idea.

Also, the extended driver and utilities plugin will have no affect on this. The device detection is is core calibre code. The KoboTouch driver is what defines the device. The extended driver adds some function to the main driver without changing the detection. The utilities plugin just adds some extra function.

Check your mirco sd card, it might need to be reformatted, going bad, have a corrupted file or the wrong class. You should have at least a class 4.

I seem to get this problem with my nook every couple years, so far the solution has been to factory reset the nook and reformat the sd card.

I agree with Davidfor. It seems to be a Windows problem rather than a problem with the micro sd card. Starting Calibre after connecting the reader or restarting it are easy solutions.

Gbm is correct as well. The op should try another card or at least format it. If the problem still persists then it is an OS problem over the last decade of using calibre I have faced this problem only twice replacing the card fixed it for me both times.

See bold, that is the tell that the sd card is the problem. With calibre shut down open the kobo using the os file manager, if you can see a noticeable delay between the opening of the Internal vs the sd card then the sd card needs to be reformatted or replaced. It could be the internal card needs to be reformatted.

Delay issue is correct, sd card takes much longer to appear in explorer, although it's a class 10 card.

It has been formatted about 14 days ago.

But I found out something mysterious: the problem appears only on my fast 8 x 4GHz CPU desktop pc, but NOT on my old notebook with a very weak 2 core CPU

Windows versions (Win 7 Enterprise 64bit, all updates installed) and Calibre (2.85.1 64bit) are the same.

I would like to test, if it works on desktop pc when I slowdown Calibre. Is there any possibility to do this? Mayby I can reduce the amount of used cores?

Make sure you are using a usb2 post one the pc not a usb3 port. See this article. Not all devices will work with a usb 3 port.

Try a different sd card if one is available. I seem to recall a program being available to test the speed and capacity of sd cards.

Do a factory reset of the Kobo.

Any anti virus or similar on the PC that is scanning the SD card before allowing access to it?

@GBM:
USB port is 2.0. I'll try another sd card and Kobo reset today.

@PeterT:
Good idea Desktop has AV, but notebook hasn't. I'll try this today too.

Great The other option might be to see if you can tell the Av not to scan certain devices.
