Troubleshooting Library books

Hi,
Don't ask many questions here, everyone seems to know so much more than I. I have been trying to download a book from the library. First time in a while. Not a Kindle book. Started looking at Apprentice Alf's notes and discovered that I can only get books that are specifically for Kindle now? So if I want to get a book that is not marked as Kindle, do I have to get a different reader?
Very confused.
Appreciate any and all clarification.

You can get ePub eBooks from Overdrive and you can use the DRM removal tools to remove the DRM and Calibre to convert to Mobi for your Kindle 2.

Now you'll need to install ADE 2.0.1 and register it so you can download the ePub.

You said library book.
Yes, the book has to be in the format for your ereader.
As to your other question, the answer is NO, you cannot convert a library book.

MR policy is that we trust our members format-shift library books for convenience' sake and not to keep/upload/share/sell. As such, we have no objection.

I can think of six eBook format OverDrive sometimes offers (I'm assuming your library uses OverDrive since it's the only one to offer Kindle books).

OverDrive Read for reading in a web browser (online or offline)
Kindle (for Kindle obviously)
EPUB eBook (a ePub using Adobe DRM)
Open EPUB eBook (a DRM-free ePub)
PDF eBook (a PDF using Adobe DRM)
Open PDF eBook (a DRM-free PDF)

OD Read is only really useful for reading on a desktop/laptop although I suppose it might be usable on a tablet if one didn't want to use OverDrive's app for some reason. Open ePub's are easily converted using Calibre or KindleGen, Open PDF's are convertable, but PDF's don't generally convert well without a lot of work. Adobe DRM'd ePub's & PDF's won't be convertible while the DRM is in place (discussion beyond that is for Apprentice Alf, not here). Another option is to grab a Nook, Kobo or other reader that supports Adobe DRM (used Kobo's and Nook's can go pretty cheaply for older models) or use a tablet or smartphone (if available) for reading those books.

I thought I had read you literally couldn't format shift library books.
So wasn't a trust issue but a misunderstanding.
