The Years of Endurance: 1793-1802 by the late British author Arthur Bryant (Wikipedia, obituary at The New York Times), a once highly-popular and now perhaps mildly controversial historian who was the favourite of several mid-20th century prime ministers, is his vintage history of Britain's involvement in the Napoleonic Wars, this one being the intended 1st installment in a comprehensive 3-volume set and apparently containing some historical comparisons sparked by the then-current events of WWII, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press.
This was originally published in 1942 by William Collins, and had been reprinted many times over the next half-century with paper editions right up until 2001. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description Britain's first global war...as told by Britain's first great popular historian. 'The The Years of Endurance: 1793-1802' is one of the master-works of British narrative history. In his own peerless style, in the first of a three volume history of the Napoleonic Wars, Bryant tells the compelling story of the conflict with revolutionary France which began in 1793 and was to culminate with the battle of Waterloo. Thought of by many as the first world war, fought over four continents and two oceans this war shaped the world for the next century. For 22 years, starting in 1793, Britain was at war with France. But the early years of the Napoleonic Wars were harsh ones for Britain, with the collapse of her allies, the Irish in rebellion, her fleets in mutiny and her finances in ruin. Yet Bryant shows how strong leadership helped turn Britain's fortunes around, and how the nation rallied to defeat the French. 'The Years of Endurance' is the story of how the foundations of Britain's future victory were established. |
