How to force calibre to download only the Kindle ASIN?
Hi,

I'm stuck on this one. I need my books (sideloaded) to have the Kindle ASIN (the one starting with B0) in order to integrate with Goodreads, but with 99% books, when I download the metadata, I get the identifier for the paperback version, which doesn't work for goodreads integration. Then I got to go to the Amazon site, copy the Kindle ASIN manually, paste it into calibre and then run the quality check fix...

So, is there a way to force calibre to download the metadata from the kindle version specifically?

I'm running a Kindle Paperwhite 3 (2015).

No not really. Metadata download works by searching for the book details and simply uses the best match as returned by the site being searched. In the case of amazon the site being searced is a search engine since amazon does not allow calibre access to its website.

Thank you for your answer... so basically there is no way for that? Not even a plugin or something? I have to fetch the asin manually for all those books and insert it into calibre?

You want to synchronize with goodreads, to have there the same library as in calibre?
I use the Plugin "Goodreads Sync" to synchronize with my Calibre and Goodreads account. To see what you can reach, use this Tutorial.
After the Calibre Books are in sync with Goodreads, the goodreads id from the book is present in the identifier field.

I don't think a plugin exists to do it.

The Goodreads Sync plugin does something like this for the Goodreads identifier. It will search Goodreads and show all the editions. You can then select the edition that matches the one you have and the identifier will be updated. It should be possible to create a plugin that does something similar for Amazon.

No, I want to synchronise my Kindle with Goodreads and that you can do only if the book has the proper Kindle ASIN.

Does it offer kindle editions where I can then get the Kindle ASIN from there?

If you choose the Kindle Edition, yes, than on the homepage you find the ASIN.

It displays all the editions that Goodreads knows about with some details.
The screenshot is of the dialog. You can see the third edition is a Kindle edition, but it doesn't show the ASIN, but once you have selected the edition, you can quickly open the Goodreads page and copy the ASIN.

Well If I want to go to a page and look for the ASIN to intert it manually, I can go to Amazon. That's not the point.

No. The intention of the plugin is to allow syncing between calibre and Goodreads. It is probably something that could be done, but, it's not something I'm interested in doing at the moment.

You can still do this:
1) Search for the ASIN you want on GR.
2) Open the GR sync dialog "choose edition" shown above. (Press G, press the button at the bottom to show all the editions)
3) Drag the page from your browser onto the dialog.
It'll set the GR ID to the edition with the ASIN you chose.
