Kobo aura edition 2 screen is dark

Hi all , I have a kobo aura edition2 and went to use it the other day and when I turned it on only 4 of the 5 start up squares went black and then the screen went dark, I'm not sure what's going on as I can't connect it to my pc although it does seem to be reacting as when I press on the right side as if I'm turning a page after the 6th is press it refreshes the page, although the screen is still dark I can see the page flash as if it was refreshing ......im at a total loss as what to do as I cant see anything on the screen, has anybody had this type of issue before, I've tried a manual reset but can't get that to work

See some of the other recent threads. Basically there was a faulty upgrade pushed out and installed. Options are to do a factory reset, or to connect to a PC and poke randomly in the lower right side of the screen to find the connect button, and then either use Kobo desktop or manually copy the correct upgrade to your device.

I suspect you've run afoul of the same bug that was briefly introduced in a recent firmware update, which was quickly fixed but stills afflicted many.

What you can do

1) your Kobo is still working the screen is just black. If you connect it to a computer and tap from about an inch up on the right hand side you should eventually hit the 'connect' button and can then side load a fixed firmware update. This can be found in the current stickied instructions for patching firmware 4.4.xx post.

2) you can factory reset your Kobo. This will erase everything on the device and roll back to whatever firmware it had started on. You can then update to the most recent firmware safely

Once you've managed to get your Aura2 connected to the computer, side load version 4.4.9349 firmware. That will fix the problem.

Update:
Not much to update really, I've plugged the usb into the laptop and tried to connect it, the screen goes dark but do you think I can find the connect button? No I can't lol I've been tapping all over the right hand side of the screen for ages but can't seem to find the connect button, I've tried tapping all over the right hand side , I'll keep trying , I just wish I could remember exactly where it was on the screen

I'd suggest tapping in a straight line up along the right side moving over slightly.

There's an alternative route but it's also tricky given the bug.

A factory reset can be initiated if you restart the Kobo and tap repeatedly in the lower two corners. However that tapping needs to happen pretty quickly once you've started the reboot. I'm not sure if the screen would ever not be solid black while you attempt this game. If it's successful you'll be presented with an option to factory reset, again hopefully the screen would actually display this message. Anything on the device would be lost, however books purchased through Kobo and annotations and bookmarks that were synced of those books would be restored when you signed into your Kobo account. Any sideloaded content and annotations of that content would be gone though.

That's not how you do a factory reset for the Aura Edition 2. The methods are described on https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kob...Aura_Edition_2.

@Dan5878: For finding the connect button, if you tap outside the dialog box, it will be dismissed. I think the safest is to start from the centre of the screen and moving straight down. Or, measuring my Glo, which has the same size and resolution as the Aura Edition 2, the centre of the button is 45mm from the left side and 25mm from the bottom.
