Old Library not recognised
I saved my calibre library onto an external hard drive using windows file history. I installed Calibre on my new computer and gave the file location on the external when prompted to set a library location in the set up wizard. I got the error message there is no calibre library at that location. I manually copied the whole library folder to my new computer the files were all successfully transferred including my metadata.db file but when I click on the switch create library button and give it the location on my new computer I get the same error message. What should I do?

Still does not work
I had read and tried all the steps in the FAQ before making the original post. I no longer have access to my old computer just the copy on the external drive. When I try to import the data it says no exported data in file when I copy it manually it says the folder is not a library file even though it is a library file.

If it is saying it is not a library, then it is missing the metadata.db. Make sure the emtadata.db is present in the folder you are pointing calibre to.
Or right click the add books button and choose "Add books from directories, one per directory" |

If you used the Import/Export: those are a spanned set of Zip files, that Import knows about. The full set must be complete
OTOH your Library is just a set of folders in the pattern remembered by Metadata.db. The 'backup' Json is all the stuff to make a reconstruct the (empty) DB with your formulas and Library settings, when doing a 'Library Restore' because the DB was hosed and each titles OPF (there for backup) will be read to populate the DB. |

Jumping in to say "Thanks" -- I had *.db excluded in my RoboCopy Job file since I had a lot of Icon_Cache.db's and Thumb_Cache/db's being copied all the time.
Reading this thread, I realized that I was excluding a very important file (metadata.db) so I changed my job file, and now I could recover my library from a major catastrophe |

Hi, I don't know what I am doing wrong, when I open the calibre library folder I can clearly see the metadata file below all the individual book folders. I have checked and re checked that the folder I am selecting is the one that contains the metadata file and it is. the metadata file is not visible when i click the add books button. I have also tried restoring the database and that doesn't work either. Is there really no choice but to go back and add in each book individually?

Using "Add books from directories, one per directory" will add all the books back automatically.
