What makes a book unique?

I've run into this problem before, but I can't seem to find the solution this time. I'm breaking an omnibus into individual volumes, but I can't add them to my Kindle using calibre. I currently have four books, but as soon as I try to add a second one, the first one disappears.

The thing that makes it interesting is that if I just copy the files from the library folder to the document folder on the Kindle, the books work correctly, and now show up in calibre as being on the device, and match the ones in the library.

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Edit Metadata Book ID's make sure that the omnibus Amazon and ASIN number have been deleted, and the individual volumes ID are being used.

good advice from GBM
Kindles use the ASIN.
Others do it differently. There is no Single solution that fits all brands / models

I assume your books have the same title/aithors. In which case, you will need to add {id} to the send to device filename template

Thanks for all your help, guys.
(sigh)
There's a saying, "You learn something new every day." Unfortunately, I seem to be learning the same things over and over. In this post I noted my solution to the original problem. Turns out that was the solution this time, too.
In my defense, I had the EPUBs of another series that I had processed successfully and they did NOT have the "calibre:title_sort" field changed. I guess I must have changed them within calibre and forgotten that the field in the OPF and the calibre title sort field were the same thing. (shrugs)

Kovid, why is the sort field used instead of the title? I really would like to understand how all this stuff works.

Are the ASIN and and ISBN significant as bernie suggests? I had already removed them, so it is just another "Oh, by the way" things.

Thanks, again.

Must be a generational thing.
I grew up with Phonebooks, Card Catalogs in the middle of the Library, file cabinets, not keyboards (I also can drive Stick Shift cars and parallel park )

Ln, Fn seems normal
Eliminating/demoting 'Noise words' (A, The) in a title 9sort) is useful.
Try and find a physical title filed under A or The
