56 mb ebook no longer opening in ereader
I had a merged ebook of 56.4 mb that I compiled using EpubMerge in Calibre. There was no problem and the ebook converted on the fly to kepub with the Kobo Utilities plugin was opening in the Kobo reader without any problem.
Because I wanted to add a book to the compilation, I removed the ebook from the Kobo reader. I did the new compilation which is now 56.8 mb and sent it across to the ereader the same way I had done previously, but now when I try to open the ebook, the reader reboots every time. The ebook will not open. I thought maybe there was a problem with the compilation, so I re-merge all the books a few times but still the same problem. In the end, I decided to put the original merged ebook that was previously opening without any problem, but now it doesn't open anymore. I get the same problem. When I tried to open the ebook, the reader reboots. This is infuriating. I don't think there's a problem with the ebook itself because using the file manager in windows, I can open the ebook from the Kobo directory when the reader is connected. Anyone here has any idea of what the problem could be? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks. |

There was thread discussing this earlier in the year. In that case, it was triggered by a catalogue generated by the calibre. I couldn't find a real pattern to the behaviour. I did report it to Kobo, so hopefully a fix will come along.
One thing I did find is with some of the books that triggered the restart, the book would work if I opened it after the restart. |

After I posted my original message, I noticed that all my collections were now empty. Also some other big epubs I tried to open also resulted in reboot. I was able to open a huge one that had previously been opened but I think it was the ones that I'd never opened before that were causing reboots.
In any case, I ended up doing a factory reset. It's a pain in the proverbial, because I had to then re-update the firmware and then patch it (there's some of the patch options that I can't live without). And now I'm in the process of re-loading all my ebooks (around 1500) on the reader and it's a slow process since they're being converted to kepub on the fly. Obviously, the factory reset fixed the problem. I wonder what caused the problem. I can imagine that it could be this issue of a catalogue generated by Calibre. In any case, it must have been something to do with the transfer of ebooks from Calibre to the ereader. Maybe something to do with the Kobo extended driver plugin. I just hope it doesn't happen again. I just found a thread a few pages back about a similar problem to mine - large book no longer opening and causing reboot (large in that case was less than 20 mb). In that case they did a factory reset like me and it also fixed the problem. In that case, they didn't update the firmware after the reset. In mine, I updated it even before trying to sideload any books on the device, and it worked anyway. The good thing about all this is that I was on firmware 4.3.8871 before the reset, and now I found out there was a later version 4.3.8966 which I installed (I'm aware there an even later version released in the last few days, but as it's not yet patched I didn't installed it). With this new 4.3.8966 version, the reader appears to be more responsive. The dictionaries for instance open definitely faster (however when I tested it, I had only a few books on the device - maybe once the 1500 books are on it, it might be different). In any case, thanks for replying to my message. It always nice to know you're not the only one having a specific problem. By the way, in my case the book would not open if I tried immediately after the restart. Cheers Last edited by wingmongyee; 04-14-2017 at 09:02 PM. |

There is yet a newer firmware version 4.3.9084. There are patches for it. So you can give it a go. You can find the relevant link for your device in the firmware thread in this forum section.

Thanks for letting me know.
I'd already seen that the patch had become available, therefore I've already installed the update a few days ago. It still feel more responsive just like with the previous update. I didn't notice any other change. I miss a couple of the options with the new patch though, particularly the 24 line spacing values and the Set Kepub hyphenation. But it's not a major problem, and until GeoffR is back online to complete the patch, it will do. Cheers. |
