Sony Reader... WOW

Just been playing with a Sony Reader in Waterstones, in the UK. What a fantastic looking little device, little being the operative word. I really would love one (Maybe a Xmas present, from my wife), but its a real shame its still a Windows device only. Being a Mac user this annoys me greatly, I know there are ways around this but its still a drawback.
One question I have, I assume when using the new Waterstones ebook site, it doesn't matter what flavour of OS you are using its just a straight download, which can be put on a memory stick or copied to the reader as a mass storage device, Is this correct ?

The Waterstones site sells books in a format called "Adobe Digital Editions" (ADE). This requires that a portable device (such as a Sony Reader) be "authorised" before you can read a book on it, and that can currently only be done using the Windows Desktop version of ADE. Once it's been authorised, however (which is a one-time process), you can buy and download books using a Mac, Linux, etc.

Once it has been authorized, you can buy and download ebooks using a Mac, but not yet Linux because there is no Linux ADE (yet). See Downloading ePub on Apple Mac OS X.

From what I gather the Mac version of DE doesnt recognize the Sony so I dont think you can do it from the mac side unless you put it on the SD card. I will try it and see.

That was exactly my reaction, playing with one in Waterstones. The build quality seemed vastly superior to my Cybook and the controls were much more flexible.

Yes.
You do not need windows computer to put content on the Reader.
As long as your operating system of choice can use a memory card reader/writer ...
You do need to connect the device to the Window computer only once, to authorize your device, and possibly again when you want to upgrade firmware.

This is indeed correct. After activating mine on a Windows box, I am able to use it fine on my Mac. Also I've been using Calibre to do some conversions when needed. But I definitely like the build of this device. Let's me read books whenever I want without having to lug a bunch of them around at once.

That's nice to know, I dont really want to have to install a VM on my Mac (tried it dont like it) So will just get hold of a Windoze box to activate and update firmware. Thanks to everyone else who offered advice in this thread too.

Of course the only problem now is, what are Sony going to announce on Oct 2nd.
