trapped in "Set Up Your Kindle"

On PW3. Set in Aeroplane mode.

Clicked on "Set Up Your Kindle" and the ONLY option is to go to Amazon and that requires you to connect to wifi.

No way to exit or back out.

In the end, I did a power-button reset. I suppose I could have turned off my router and let it try to connect and eventually give up.
Is there a less brutal way to get out of this without connecting to Big Brother?

You can't even put it in a collection in the library; I don't want it there at the top level, but hesitate to just delete it.

Chose 'Set Up Your Kindle'
Allow it to search for access points.
If it finds one or more, it will ask you for permission to connect to one of them.
Instead of picking one (and providing credentials if protected), chose 'Complete setup Later'.
Then enable 'Airplane Mode'.

Some features require that the Kindle be registered.
Or, fake registered,
Find the 'Fake Registration' thread.
Go to most recent post.
Scroll upwards / backwards in time to locate the most recent version of the file. (IIRC, it does require to be jail broken to reach the file.)

Some features require a Wifi connection to Amazon.
Since collections are something maintained in your "Manage Content and Devices" section of your Amazon account, collections may be one of those things.

Unless you feel strongly about not agreeing to Amazon's EULA, just register the darn thing (registering your Kindle is also agreeing to the EULA - it is in that "too big to read" legal document on your Kindle).
Then take away its Wifi access credentials.
If not using an access protected Wifi, you should be.

Note:
Changing the registration state on the Kindle will wipe the 'developer keys' (not the jail break key).
So remember to re-install the 'hotfix' to re-install them after a registration state change.

And I had set it up before.
But I do not want to connect to Amazon again; I don't want any more updates to sneak in (since I'm at 5.8.9, and while that is uncracked as yet, letting it update further just makes my chances of getting it JB in the future even slimmer).

You just didn't go far enough to find the egress.
It will only connect as soon as you turn off airplane mode if you have previously setup Wifi access - but in that case, you would not be getting the "Setup Your Kindle" choice.

So turn off Aeroplane mode -
The Kindle will search for access points -
It will list those found, and ask permission to connect to one of them (which if more than one, you have to select) -
At that panel, there is an option to "Complete Setup Later" -
Pick that one.

Then keep finger away from "setup your Kindle" selection until you are ready to do that dance again.

I had previously setup Wifi access. So it would connect immediately if I turned off aeroplane mode (unless I switched off the router).
And I am now seeing "Setup Your Kindle".
I thought it was a howto book, since it's listed along with my actual books in the library.

I know this is not a big problem. It just strikes me as rather coercive that I am not given any choice once I open this "book"; I can only "pull the plug" one way or another to get out.

You are saying this is in a list with the rest of your books.
Can you open the other books?
Can you do anything on this Kindle?

My advice is contact Amazon.

That is pretty large, you should not have any trouble NOT putting your finger on it.

Open it and edit it to your liking, if it is just a 'normal' book.

My opinion is just do the setup and then leave it in airplane mode. Amazon cannot talk to the Kindle and the Kindle cannot talk to Amazon. Without setting up, you cannot create collections.
