Problem loading books via Calibre and Windows Explorer since updating to FW 4.3.xxxx

Hi,

I am unable to load books via Calibre or Windows Explorer.

I'm having a problem loading new books since updating my Kobo Glo firmware to 4.3.xxxx I found today that 4.3.8945 had been released and I was hoping this update would resolve my issue but it hasn't.

I have updated Calibre to 2.81.
Kobo Glo FW 4.3.8945

Steps I complete:
  • In Calibre I select the book, right click and select send to device main memory (my standard practice).
  • The job loads in Calibre - I check the Jobs log and it completed 100%.
  • A green tick then appears in the On Device column in Calibre.
  • I then check via the Device - Show Books in Main Memory - the book appears in there.
  • I eject the device, the kobo processing content progress bar ticks along, and completes
  • my kobo loads and opens as expected
  • I check my library, sorting by unread and recent - no new books since before 4.3.xxxx installed, I then perform a search for the book I loaded, the search returns no results.

The really weird thing is, the book is loaded onto the Kobo - I check via windows explorer - the epub is in the folder as expected.

If I load the book without using calibre, just add the epub to the (already existing) authors folder on the kobo main memory drive, upon restart, the kobo processing content progress bar ticks along, and completes but the book is still nowhere to be found via the device (I can see it using windows explorer).

I have checked Calibre and the Attempt to Support Newer Firmware is ticked / I've had it both ticked and unticked.

I have also tried with other epubs - the same Calibre process above and again the epub file appears in the folder list when viewed in windows explorer but cannot be found via the device

Does anyone else have this issue?

Does anyone know what else I can try before I go for the factory reset?

    thanks in advance.

Corrupted database?

Have you checked it? (One way: Calibre, KoboUtilities->Database->Check....)

OK, thanks for that, I didn't know it existed so had to install the plugin in order to find and run it - very nifty!

Its come back CorruptError: database disk image is malformed

I shall do some research and find out what this means, the detailed error is:
calibre, version 2.81.0

Glad you found the cause of the books not showing up. To bad it's a corrupt db.

As far as I know, the only way (besides restoring it if you took a backup) to fix it is to logout and login again (which will cause it to be rebuilt, all your books will still be there, some stats will probably be lost).

Either logout/login, or wait until one of the Davids or another of the great people here pop up and tell you what's the best solution.

Solution Found!

Per this thread, this is the solution:
"Easiest way to fix it is to just "logout" on the device; go to Settings | Accounts and select "Sign out" next to the Kobo account. This will delete the Kobo database, but will not change the firmware.

You will have to redo the setup though on the device."

I think you already gave it to him. If the OP doesn't have a backup of the database (and given that he only just now installed the Kobo Utilities plugin, odds are he doesn't), logging out and logging in again will rebuild it. His reading stats and read status of the books will be lost, though. AFAIK that's the only solution to this, short of a factory reset, which obviously is even more destructive.

He should look at the KU plugins' capability to (automatically) make backups of the DB and config files, now that he has installed it. Doesn't help him now, but will save his bacon if it ever happens again.

Since this hasn't been talked about much recently and there seem to be more corrupted databases than normal: make sure you are PROPERLY EJECTING your Kobo BEFORE you pull the cable from the computer. Most USB devices don't care these days, but if you don't properly eject your Kobo the odds are you will manage to corrupt your database over time. You might get away with it for a bit, but eventually it will bite you.
