Asus Eee PC 1000H Unboxing!

Finally, my wait is over: Today the Asus Eee PC 1000H arrived in my mailbox. As promised, here are some first photos of my unboxing.

In the back you see my trusty Lenovo T61p notebook, which appears huge in comparison (15.4-inch screen). Nevertheless, the Eee shines, especially its LED-backlit display (10.2-inch) appears a lot brighter than the display of the much more expensive T61p.

Also note how tiny the charger is. Wonderful, if you are like me traveling a lot.

I am not exactly sure what to do next. I am tempted to install Debian. Or perhaps not. Must see first how far the Asus Eee community has come.

Btw, I apologize for the last four photos which are not exactly related... it's a mother squirrel carrying its kitten along in my garten, which kinda distracted me while I was doing the unboxing.

Yay! Congratulations <insert tears of joy smiley>.

It almost looks like the Asus is exactly the width of the Lenovo keyboard, so you're not stuck with those tiny chicklette keys.

Love the squirrel pics. I've only seen brown colored squirrels in the U.S. The black one is very pretty.

Very nice! What are the trackpad and bottom-of-pad buttons like? I remember I didn't much like the hard-click feel of them on the smaller Eee... they felt like you'd wear 'em out in a year.

Like most current netbooks, this one uses an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz CPU. The display is 10.2 inch, it uses a 80GB Sata HDD, has Windows XP preinstalled, and comes with a 6 cell battery that promises to last up to 7 hours.

Performance-wise I have no complaints so far. Windows is very snappy, and I was even able to watch a trailer video in full HD without frame drops.

I haven't had much time to play with it yet, and right now the battery is charging.

Ditto with the 1000. Very hard to click. I prefer to double click on the touch pad instead.

Probably the original EEE. Only one I can think of that came with a 4/8gb flash drive instead of an HD.

And only 8 inches? I thought the whole point was to get smaller.

The T61p looks like a road warier compared to the new ASUS. Maybe you can make it dual boot. I did that on my older Sony Z505 that can go into Win98SE or Linux. Extended the life of the 450 MHz CPU by many years.

Wouldn't it be great if it had a swivel screen like the XO. It'd be much easier to read on then.

Didn't you also buy a MSI Wind? Or did you change your mind? Is this a better machine than the MSI Wind?

I wouldn't have minded so much the smaller screen; problem is, with a smaller screen comes a smaller keyboard. My fingers were simply not made for those...

I think they are very similiar in form and features. Alas, the Wind was still on backorder (I paid for it almost two months ago), and meanwhile the Asus came in - for the same price. Hence the sudden switch (I only had to call the computer store to change my order internally).

Also, the Wind is currently selling only with a 3 cell battery (at least here in Switzerland). Given that I would have had to pay at least another 100$ for the battery upgrade (once it became available), the Asus was my better choice.
