Accessing Wikipedia over 3G
When buying my next Kindle, I would get the 3G option only if it allowed random access to Wikipedia over 3G. I didn't think this was currently possible with new Kindles, but I just read something that suggests otherwise:
"Search: The Kindle has an advanced search feature that is always accessible from the menu bar. [...] You can choose a number of places to search, including this book, [...] and Wikipedia." (The above is from a website that competes with Mobileread, so I'm guessing it would be bad form to link to it.) This would mean I could type anything into the search field I wanted to find in Wikipedia and the Kindle could access the Wikipedia article over 3G. This is exactly what I was hoping for but doubted was possible. However, when I try this with my basic Kindle from 2015, I only get the options to search "My Items," "Kindle Store," "Text in Books," and "Dictionary." "Wikipedia" does not appear as an option. So I'd like to know which Kindles can access Wikipedia from the Search field? Is it newer models than the basic Kindle from 2015 or models with 3G or what? And if Wikipedia does appear as a search option, can the Kindle access it over 3G or only Wi-Fi? TIA for clearing this up for me. |

Well, my Voyage (wifi only) certainly offers that option. I haven't tried it, but it's there. Data point #1.

I have the Voyage and the Paperwhite with 3G and both let me access Wikipedia when I'm away from my Wifi. That's why I bought the 3G.
The translation feature also works with 3G. The only other thing you can do with 3G is access Amazon. Well, it's the only other thing I know of. There might be some others that I'm not aware of. It won't let you access the internet through the browser without Wifi Having 3G also adds one additional feature: daylight savings time updates automatically, which the Wifi only versions don't do. It's a small thing but nice. Barry |
