Unhappy Kindle 5 better contrast than Kindle Touch 8?

I have a Kindle 5 (basic model, no touch screen) and was happy with it. Unfortunately it fell down and now it has a small grey spot on the screen. It can still be read well, but I found the spot a bit distracting, so I decided to buy a new one. So I bought the Kindle Touch 8 (also the basic version, with a touch screen but no Paperwhite). It has the same screen resolution and I thought that the reading experience would be the same or better, being a newer model. To my surprise and disappointment, I found that it was the opposite: after trying all the fonts available I found that my favorite one (Caecilia, 5th smallest size out of 9) still offered a worse experience than the Kindle 5 (regular font). It's subtle, but it has less contrast than the Kindle 5... the letters seem gray when compared with the black letters of the Kindle 5.

I found myself preferring to read in the old Kindle 5 in spite of the spot on the screen.

I showed the two Kindles to other people to see if it was just me, and everyone noticed the better contrast of the Kindle 5, although they thought that it was subtle enough that I would get used to it. I agree, I would get used to it, but why get used to something inferior when I could buy a second hand Kindle 5 in good condition?

Has anyone else noticed this difference? Why would a newer model of screen with the same resolution look worse? Is it because it's touch? Or is it just because of subtle differences in the font (Caecilia in the recent model looks very much the same as the regular font in the Kindle 5, just... less dark? Would the paperwhite model offer a crisp font with good contrast like the kindle 5?
