I have recently just bought my first ever kindle and I was wondering how to add library books on to it?

You can't add library eBook to your Kindle. Kindle library ebooks are not possible outside the USA. To read Library eBooks, you'll need a Reader that supports ePub such as a Kobo. If library eBooks are important to you, you could return your Kindle and get a Kobo.

also you may still be able to find USA libraries which accept non USA users ( for an annual fee) and then the Kindle loan system should work. I used it (from UK) when I had a FLP membership and was able to get Kindle books loans onto my Kindle Last edited by stumped; 02-28-2017 at 10:53 AM. |

Kindle Unlimited is not the same as Overdrive. Not even close.

For doing that, you would need a library which offers Kindle book. I don't know if Australian libraries do it. Overdrive in USA offers Kindle books (not all of them but a lot), so if Australian libraries don't offer them you could find an USA library which allow cards to non-residents (as Brooklyn Public Library, Free Library of Philadelphia or Orange County).

Free Library of Philadelphia is what I used. 50 US dollars for 1 year, huge selection across all formats- not that simple to set up or renew at the time but that may have changed. overdrive is Over-rated, particulary as they pretty much broke the checkout process unless you tracked down an obscure specific old version of ADE Also the uk library overdrive selections are overweight in fashionable drek so if screwing with werewolves ( aka paranormal romance) is your thing, then you are in luck, proper storytelling much less so |

I use ADE 2.0.1 and it works perfectly with Overdrive. ADE 2.0.1 is still available on Adobe's website. ADE 2.0.1 is NOT some obscure old version.

ok I'll bite - what was the release date of ADE 2.0.1 and how many later versions exist ? to my knowledge we have had ADE 3, ADE 4...
so how can you claim it's not Old ? It sure ain't current. I did say they "almost broke" checkout not that they totally broke it. Any new to overdrive user would do the obvious thing - read the how to at their library which almost certainly tells them to get ADE - so they go to Adobe & install the current version.. then end up here desperately seeking an explanation of why it ain't working. now I've not gone to my library FAQ for a recheck before posting so maybe you can find an overdrive or a library FAQ saying you must skip back 2 generations and install 2.0.1. for checkout to work .... so prove me wrong if you can update here is the entirely of Overdrive#s current advice re ADE: to download eBooks to your computer (first, you'll need to install and authorize Adobe Digital Editions). that's it - nothing about broken versions update 2: checking adobe UK it's up to version 4.5 I see lower down there a link to the old version 3 nothing on this page re version 2 ( I do accept that other links exist, as there have been posted to this forum. I cite this page as evidence of the relative obscurity of that version) http://www.adobe.com/uk/solutions/eb.../download.html Last edited by stumped; 02-28-2017 at 02:03 PM. |

Last I checked newer versions of ADE work fine with OD. It's just that a lot of folks on the forum don't want to go newer than 2.0.1 as newer versions are capable of doing Adobe's "new" hardened DRM and they don't want that since they use the same ADE install for their purchased books which they like to remove the DRM from.

I half accept that. I tried some Google searches and I see many horror stories featuring kobo readers, ade3, 4, 4.5 and authorization problems. The newer versions seem ok for the library to pc step, but then the copy from pc to kobo is problematic.
And I just took a fresh look at overdrive from this tablet where I had not already installed it. It's scarily complicated, do I want to login with Facebook, or a library card, or get an overdrive account.l. then pros and cons of each.... I consider myself computer literate but it is not user friendly IMHO. |

You said obscure old version. Yes, ADE 2.0.1 is old. But it is not obscure. That's where the mistake lays.

Perhaps it is over-rated, but, as far as I know, it is the only library system which offers Kindle books (no, neither the prime system nor the unlimited are library systems but subscription systems, perhaps OK but not what the OP is asking).

semi-obscure then ?
it is not mentioned on the uk download link I posted. anyway, I thought I'd continue to test the new improved overdrive app some more on my android tablet... so I found my library card stuff, logged into the app, went through the alpha serach bit to find my library. decided I wanted a book so I clicked on that and the 1st think the library page want me to do is sign in all over again. bad start for the app. so moving on, I checkout a couple of epubs ( for downloading at the PC later) I decide not to do anything rash like downloading them to the ( probably not aurhorized) tablet, i decide instead so see if I could just read them online ... 5 minute later I've given up, booted the PC, logged into library gone to my loans, and the PC version says do I want to read them in a browser... aaargh - yes I did want to do that 5 minutes ago, on the tablet and you would not let me.... still, ade 2.01 only threw a mild hissy fit about expired/ missing books in its local folder [ i have not used it for several weeks] & seems willing to now do the downloads.... I am sure that amzon + USA libraries manage it way better then thisfor kindle formats |
