Any reason to keep a kindle keyboard?
Both my husband and I have a PW (he has a later generation, I have the first one (because he left his in an airplane pocket, for the 2d time)). I wonder if there is any reason to keep it? I saw someone singing the praises of a KKeyboard, but now I can't find it.
Should I keep it, or just trade it in? |

The main utility in keeping the Keyboard is that it is new enough to support kf8 (from which DRM can be removed) and old enough not to support kfx (from which DRM cannot be removed). Having a Keyboard on your Amazon account means that you will still be able to obtain azw and azw3 files from which drm can be removed even if Amazon start making only kfx files available for devices which support that format. Mind you, the 1st generation Paperwhite which you have also does not currently support kfx, though presumably it would be easier and more likely for Amazon to add kfx support to this device than the older Keyboard.
If you're not concerned with removing DRM and you have no particular preference or affection for the Keyboard, there is no real reason to keep it that I can think of. |

Back a few months ago I purchased several e-books I Could NOT get the DRM removed. [I posted about it.] I even Stopped buying e-books from Amazon! I was so annoyed. Then about a month ago I tried again! And ALL the e-books worked! I went back & started buying Amazon again not had 1 problem. Brian & Harry YOU were the 1st 2 people that Told me they were from my description they were KFX & would not could not be drm removed.... Yet I removing them & the Only thing that changed was a few updates on Calibre.

@Katie1. I am pleased to hear both that you are buying from Amazon and successfully removing the DRM with no problems. But I can assure you that there is currently no known method of removing DRM from KFX files. So you must be getting KF8 files somehow. Perhaps you are using an earlier version of K4PC?

Oh and Brian & Harry told you they might be kfx not they were kfx. Since you removed them and updated Calibre, that tells me it was a Calibre problem not a file format. |

As was mentioned, you can easily change the battery in a Kindle Keyboard -- not so on later models. And the browser is open, allowing you to do things you cannot do on newer Kindles, such as read and reply to email. I've easily replaced screens, motherboards, keyboards and faceplates on my several Kindles. The only thing that tempts me about newer models is the lighting! I'm still clipping a light on my Kindle cases to read in the dark. And they suck on the beach or at the park in the sun.

I thought I didn't need my old keyboard - until I lost my PW and was in the middle of a good book! It took Amazon a week to get my new PW to me in my little back corner of Canada, and in the meantime I was able to load the keyboard and keep reading.
