Calibre V3.0

Hola!

I remember having a brief discussion at some point last year and in the thread Kovid mentioned that a new, rewritten Calibre V3.0 was due by "the end of the year."

Well, I can't find that post(!) now, but the point of the comment was with regard to the Calibre Server portion having a majjor upgrade.

Did I just miss the password or secret handshake to get in the right download door?

Calibre is running fine and I am not complaining, but his comments at the time suggested it might be a much better approach. So, just curious

I did not say he promised it. The words "was due by..." is not a promise and I didn't take it as one. No need to yell about it...

As far as I can tell, Kovid first mentioned calibre 3.0 in January 2016.

From postings throughout 2016 it seems that calibre 3.0 has not yet reached beta, unless I missed something. No doubt Kovid will announce a beta release when it's got to that stage.

If that was the thread, the "end of year" comment is gone. And I am pretty sure it was a thread I posted in when dealing with Calibre Server issues or perhaps a 'please include' comment I had at the time.

No matter, no harm, no foul. I was just checking on status and I got it.

There was another thread, other than the one started by Katsunami, where V3.0 was discussed a bit, but I can't find it. Kovid might have posted 'by the end of the year' in it, but I'd be very surprised if it wasn't qualified with something like 'hopefully'.

It's mostly done, you can run it from a regular calibre install using

calibre-debug --new-server

to try it out. There is basically some work left to make it fully offline-able and then to replace the old server in the codebase with it. It actually would have been ready by now, but I got distracted by: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty

Oh and the major new features it brings to the table are an

- in browser ebook viewer that works offline as well

- support for exporting multiple libraries via a single server instance.

- Multiple user accounts and the ability to restrict what each account can see/do

- And it sets the stage for allowing the server to make modifications to the library in the future, though that wont be part of calibre 3.0.

- Lots of internal technical improvements (basically the entire stack it uses from the backend to the frontend was re-written)
