Apparently, I signed up for these forums about four and a half years ago, then promptly forgot about it. Silly me.

Anyway, I really became much more interested in the technical aspects of ebooks last spring, when I found an old book that I thought a blind friend of mine would find entertaining and useful, but no digital version apparently has been made yet. Before that, I kept being astonished and annoyed that so many commercial ebooks are so poorly proofread, and became interested in correcting, at the least, the most egregious errors, which, of course, means learning about the internals of ebooks.

My preferred format is epub, which I realize is also many, if not most, others' preferred format for the obvious fact that it's the most portable format at this point.

I got sidetracked last year, due to various personal problems, but now I'm returning to work on it with a vengeance. I can never decide whether I should start out building epubs from public domain books that I own, or just editing messed up books that I already have. I suppose I can do both at the same time...but I'm already spreading myself thin, as far as having too many ongoing projects in other fields. At least I learn quickly, so I feel like putting in some effort now will make later work much easier and quicker, leaving me more time for those other projects.

As you may have noticed, once I start talking, I have a hard time shutting myself up.

* Almost forgot to mention that while my desktop computer is running Windows 10, I recently dumped that on my ancient Asus laptop in favor of Ubuntu Studio. I may change distros later on, but at the moment, I need functionality, without headaches. So...all of the ebook tools I might use are also going on the laptop, which will probably end up confusing me a bit. Can't be helped, but it does mean I'll be following threads for both OSes.

* Wondered why I forgot that I'd signed up and forgotten, so I checked. It was four days before DHS raided my house, took my son, and all of our computers. Obviously, my new computer didn't have my bookmarks, and I was in no shape to worry about it, anyway. Still, nearly three years later, I finally got our computers back...sans drives, and with some breakage, but at least I can eventually rebuild my old desktop when I get around to it. Never let DHS know you exist.
