Calibre + Project Gutenberg - Metadata fetching error
Hi forum!
This is my very first posting here, and i am actually quite desperate in this issue. I just started using calibre a few days ago, and now wanted to get some PG books and add them to Calibre. Which is not a problem, but regarding the metadata and file names, i am completely lost. The files i downloaded are EPUB named with their PG-ID. When i open them in Calibre, the look like this: ![]() The filename is the P.G.-ID, and author is "unknown". BUT: When i open the epub, and when i click on "show book metadata": ![]() I get the CORRECT metadata: ![]() When i click on "edit metadata" in the main UI, there is AGAIN NO METADATA SHOWN! ![]() And when i try to make the automatic metadata fetching thing, i only produces errors (Despite showing 100% progress): ![]() I have a small 4 digit count of epubs from PG waiting to be added to calibre, but now i am pretty shocked. I dont have the time to edit all metadata by hand, nor want i spend the time. NOW MY QUESTIONS: 1. Is there a way to download books from PG with the correct file names and compatible metadata for calibre? 2. Is this a bug or wanted by PG that you need to rename all filenames by hand?? Most importantly: 3. Why is the correct metadata shown (3. Pic) when i click on the button in 2. pic, and NOT in the "normal" UI (Pic 1) and in the "edit metadata"-dialog (Pic 4)????? 4. How to bulk/batch correct this? 4. Why is metadata fetching not working? Do you have the same problems with Calibre+PG? I do love Calibre, even though i started using it again only for some days, and i has developed great since my first run-ins with it some years ago. But this issue is driving my crazy.. So any help, any hint how to fix this are greatly appreciated! Steve EDIT: Changed Links to resized pics. EDIT 2: Uploaded pics in original size: http://pho.to/AbHTU EDIT 3: Formating and typos corrected. Last edited by AllthatEvil; 01-27-2017 at 01:08 PM. |

Okay.. Sry, i thought the images would auto resize.. Will try to upload in lower res, hoping there is still something to see then..
Sry again. Steve EDIT: Updated, should be okay now? Will upload full size pics separate, as you cant read anything in the calibre menus, at least on my HD display. EDIT 2: Uploaded pics in original size: http://pho.to/AbHTU Last edited by AllthatEvil; 01-27-2017 at 01:00 PM. |

PG does not supply proper (what we expect) metadata in their books.
When imported into Calibre, that is what you get for Author, Title Any attempt to look up (download) further metadata will use those tokens and will fail as they only are good at PG. My solution, was to apply the correct values to the entries (View the book, correct the Data) then Polish, or one of the other methods to embed the correct data before it gets a chance to be separated. Then you can download metadata from common sources |

For the meta-data go to edit meta-data click on the epub icon then click on the icon with the pen and paper next to it, that will load the meta data from the ebook to calibre. For the future go to "Preferences-adding books" then check "read meta-data from file contents rather than file name. ![]() bernie |
