Deluxe Cover - Warning

Please be aware that there is a bit of a design flaw with the Deluxe Cover that may "catch" you out.

I have had an Iliad for about a year and it is well used. Given the cost of it I also got the most expensive cover as had seen the various posts about screen damage.

You can therefore imagine my horror when a small blister appeared about half way up the screen just under the right hand edge. About 4mm long it was seemingly a random occurence of what I naturally reasoned was a defect in the screen. I was about to start sobbing uncontrollably when I moved the Illiad and the cover closed and the culprit was revealed...the idiotically designed catch for the cover has a popper stud. As the case gets used this tends to stay fixed in a folded over position with the stud coming to rest about half way up the screen just under the right hand edge. Closing the cover causes the reinforced (and therefore quite heavy front cover to push the popper down onto the screen...repeat a couple of times a week for a few months and low and behold you will have your very own pressure damaged screen.

I am absolutely furious. A screen that is sensitive to knocks has a protective cover with a built in hammer and nail.

I await iRex's views on my liability for screen repair...

More to come I am sure

I've got the same cover. I just make sure that when I close it, the catch is on the outside where it's supposed to be, not trapped against the screen.

What a graceless response. Your lack of sympathy or understanding is staggering. I am of course now aware that had I been as insightful and careful as you I would not have a damaged screen; however, my point was that if some thought had been applied to the design of the catch then there would have been no possibility of this happening at all.

I will not bother to post again if this is the quality of the discussion.

Same issue here

Thank you very much for this very informative post, Will Wiggle.
I have bought the same cover (irex deluxe) , for the exact same reason that you did, thinking like you that such very expensive equipment should have the maximum protection.
A couple of months ago, I realized there was a little blister on the right edge of my ilaid screen, and was thinking that it was probably a manufacturing imperfection, even if I did not notice that blister earlier, when I initially bought my iliad.
After your post I tried to look at my iliad very closely, and BINGO!!! the blister is exactly located where the popper stud is located when it is between the cover and the screen...
I sincerely think that irex should do something about this, obviously their Deluxe cover despite the very high price has a big flaw. I hope that they will remain professional, honest and do something about that. It is their cover, so they SHOULD.
Please let me know what they will respond to you. I will write to them from my part as well, so they will know that this is not an isolated incident and that they should do something about their mistake.

Thank you,

Dabon.

I will not bother to post again if this is the quality of the discussion.
The post wasn't "graceless" - you highlighted an apparent design flaw and Shaggy graciously offered an addendum to your warning to indicate how to avoid it. I am sure many of us have done the same as yourself (I know I have), but now I remember to fold my cover all the way back, and hold the clip in between the front and back covers - in time, I hope that this will loosen up the leather of the clip and threfore tend to keep it sitting outside of the closed book (rather than it's "from new" desire to hammer the screen ), for when I forget to make sure.

will_wiggle, you are understandably distressed about this, but if you read shaggy's post in the positive light suggested (trying to suffix your warning with a suggestion for others), rather than a negative one, you may see that no harm or "insensitivity" was intended. Regardless, setting your mind against MobileRead on the basis that one post out of the tens of thousands is the mark of "quality" of discussion overall is an intemperate knee-jerk reaction that I don't think will serve you the way the actual overall quality of discussion here will.

That is, don't rush off. It's a good place, even amongst the disagreements and minor ructions that sometimes occur.

I hope you get with your Iliad a result satisfactory to you.

Cheers,
Marc

Marc

Thank you for your post - graceful and well written.

However, it is extremely difficult to read Shaggy's post as anything other than slightly smug and smirking at the misfortune of others; the contrast between his and your style is stark. The fact is that saying that if I had folded the catch back, like Shaggy does, I would have avoided the problem does not help me in my current predicament - it is a wise after the event comment and of no help - the point of the post was to alert people of the need to watch the catch - being told that I should have been alert to this - when I clearly was not - slightly defeats that purpose.

Fair enough, Will. I won't belabour it (even if I wanted to), lest it overlook and distract from the initiating problem and subsequent, obvious and understandable frustration.

I hope you stick around though (as your reply seems to indicate you will ), and that you will get the chance to see that the "quality of the discussion" is rich and communal in nature, even if not always totally agreeable.

Cheers, and, by the way, welcome,
Marc

I'm sorry you took it that way. I was just trying to point out that you're right, it is a bad design, and that you need to be careful of where the catch is when you close the cover. I think you're reading a lot more into my post than was intended.

It really sucks that your screen got broken. I was not being unsympathetic, it's just that there's nothing I can do about it. The only thing I can do is try to warn others that they need to pay attention to it when closing the cover. That's all I meant.
