Add extra language 'No text' or 'Pictogram'
I have quite a lot of manuals in my Calibre Library (LEGO, K'Nex), and many have only pictograms, no language.
So I tried the language 'undefined' ('Onbepaald' in Dutch), but instead of this language no language at all is added. Is it possible to add the language 'No text' or 'Pictogram' or something like that? |

AFAIK calibre uses an international standard for it's language coding, which means new entries can't be added, or existing ones changed or removed.
In the main, Calibre uses the standards defined by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Language is one of the elements of the IDPF standards, it is used in dictionary lookup functions in ebook readers, spellcheckers etc. I suggest you use another column to indicate the book is a picture book, e.g. '!Pictogram' in the Tags column, or create a tag-like custom column (eg 'Admin Tags') and put it in there. Something about the book has a Language, even if it is just the (calibre supplied) Jacket

That selection is there for exactly this purpose...where some language of the book is nothing else listed, and this is known. Having no entry in the "language" field implies no information on what language(s) the book uses. Having "Undetermined" means there is information, but none of the other choices is appropriate. |

is undetermined an ISO standard? The allowed values are ISO standards.

und is not going to be supported in calibre. As far as calibre is concerned und and blank are equivalent. und causes problems when serialized inside ebooks (with dictionary lookup, hyphenation, etc -- various renderers see und and disable all those features, instead of falling back to the default language).
That means that supporting it in calibre would mean having to write code to make sure it does not get into ebooks when updating metadata, and it means that saving and re-importing a epub would not restore the language for the special case of und. I like to avoid special cases as much as possible. |

Its in Dublin Core, to which calibre adheres for most things - if you wrangle 'und' into an epub content.opf, then at least one epub viewer/reader (can't recall which one) renders it as gobbledegook. Which is supportive of KG's position on this.
I regularly download PD epubs from a source that intermittently puts 'und' in the content.opf of some of their epubs. And I'm not sure one can have a "list of languages for a book", the DC standard defines the Language element as "A language..." - singular, it recommends RFC4646 be used. BR |
