Best way to delete books from device and sync

I've looked around for how to do this with no luck. My wife and I after finishing a book, we remove it from our device (Android tablet). In the past we've done this in Moon Reader+ by choosing Remove From Shelf and checking the Delete File box. Now I was hoping this would also remove it from Calibre the next time I plugged into the PC. Is this how it is supposed to work?

No. Deleting the book from the device does not remove it from Calibre.

This is an unusual requirement - most people want to keep the books they have loaded into Calibre. Not sure if there is an easy way to do what you ask.

Yeah, we're strange, we never read a book more than once and if it's on the shelf, then we think we haven't read it.

How about connecting to Calibre via OPDS? If I delete a book from my Net Library (as Moon calls it) will this remove it from the host PC?

no, this will not work. The Calibre server is read-only and cannot make changes on the server.

@kak_mn,

I think calibre is designed to only ever delete books from its library if the user takes the deliberate action of opening the library and requesting 'delete this book'. Even then, by default, it will ask 'Are you sure?'

It's a form of self-defence. I seem to recall various rage-filled rants from the past to the tune of "calibre ate my books".

Not reread? Oh well

I use Calibre Companion (android), It can launch Moon+ (without adding to the bookshelf)

When done, I use CC to mark the Date the book was read

The Next time I Connect, I do it as a Wireless device Connection with Sync

This updates the custom column in Calibre
THEN, once the status has been saved

(at the PC: Optional)
I can then search for #finished:true <-my name for the custom field

select any books with a tick in the ondevice (AKA ondevice:true) column and select:remove Matching from device
The advantage of this is a Batch operation if you have many books to delete

or you can just delete the book in CC

Sure, that seems to make sense. What about this, marking them as "read" in Moon, then that flag gets synced to calibre (which I think it already does this?) then I can hide the read books.

I read something else like about a wanted book, where you add something to the metadata...

I think that's roughly what theducks is suggesting in post #7. I don't think you can do it directly in Moon+. The Calibre Companion app can already do the "mark as read and sync with main calibre" thing and CC works very nicely with Moon+.

I didn't see that reply until after I replied to you

I looked at CC long ago when I first started using Calibre and decided not to use it. But now, it sounds like the way to go!

This may solve another problem too, she has a spreadsheet to keep track of books that she has read, but now this can be done in Calibre!

Before we went to ebooks, we had boxes of books in the garage rafters! Maybe this is why we have the "delete after reading" mentality.

Yes! I don't think you'll be disappointed. There's even a demo version so you can try for free with a handful (20 ???) of books.

Just to clarify. The aim is to retain Moon+ for the actual reading of books and let CC do all the file transfers and library management (sorting, searching, reading synopses, mark as read etc). However good Moon+ (or any other Android app) is at library management and browsing, CC will be an order of magnitude better (just IMO, of course).

If you don't want to have the read books in your library, you can create another library and you move there the books as they have been read. She can include date (from CC), rating, comments.... In that way, you have your library as your like but she has the info she wants without needing another tool. She could even import the spreadsheet in that calibre library, so she already has all the info.

If you both have different tablets you guys can have your own columns for read and date read. In the same calibre library with each of your devices syncing with your personal columns.
