Paperwhite: view books I want
Okay, so I lashed out and bought my mum a Paperwhite.
I then uploaded some books from my Calibre collection. Looking good! Then I registered the device and it seems to have deleted all those and replaced them with my purchased books. Woe. And so annoying. How do I remove my purchased books (which my mother is NOT interested in) and put back the ones from Calibre? |

Going from memory you want to set the Kindle library screen to "Downloaded" and "All Items" to view only what's on the device and not what's in the cloud for the registered account. (I'm sure someone will correct if my memory is faulty)

Ah yes. Downloaded shows my "Calibre'd" books. Thank you!
I would rather delete the others though because...she won't use the device if there's "science fiction" on it. I know, I know. |

The others aren't actually on the device, it's showing what's in your cloud. You could always create a separate Amazon account and register it to that (or just deregister the device I suppose).

I've just discovered the whole cloud nightmare. Sob.
I'll have to de-register the device because those purchased books just won't die (because Science Fiction always has a reset button, apparently - I should've known that). I'm chatting with support at the moment. They're trying to get me to delete the purchased books from my account. Give me strength. |

If you want set up your mother her own account at Amazon. You can use a free email address. Just put a gift certificate on It and then she/you can get books she wants. There are many public domain freebies. |

Support at Amazon is making me sad.
They're solution is to delete my purchases from the cloud. I will de-register and reset as you suggest, Cinisajoy. |

Also during the holiday season they probably hire extra part time support help so you're possibly getting someone who doesn't really know what's going on. In general their support during business hours is very good and even off-hour support is good.
Once or twice in the past I got a support person I wasn't happy with and I just called back and got someone else. Most are just fine. Barry |

What about using parental control? I never used it as its just me, but I think you can specify what one can see in the cloud and what not? So kids on the account don't see all the books mom and dad have in the cloud. Anyone that uses parental and can chime in on that? Because even with wifi off, the cloud items are still showing.
Putting it on downloaded also only shows what is on the device as someone said. Just checking in my settings under parental control and restrictions. There are 4 things one can turn off access to. Web browser, kindle store, cloud and goodreads. That might be a great option to turn off anything on the kindle besides just reading books. That way only whats on the device is accessible. You do have to set up a password for parental and it says deregistration and reset device is disabled. Which I guess its a good thing in that situation. With parental, it can stay on your account but not have access to the stuff on it. You put in the password if you want to gain access again, or just side load the books. Give it a shot, just make sure to remember the password so you can turn it off again. ![]() |

I think you're right, Atunah. I did consider it, but as I wasn't sure what the outcome would be, in the end, I de-registered the Kindle and left it like that.
So far, all has been good but if there's a glitch in the de-reg use, I'll try parental control. Thanks! |

If it were me, I'd set up a separate account for mum, you can use the same credit card if you want, and that would just have "her" books on it.

Yes, agreed, patrickt!
The Kindle has been a success so far (she actually loves it), so I'll probably create her own account and then we can buy books for her and get them delivered to the device. At the moment, we're still on the trial run Gutenberg-y type books. |
