Thank you, one and all!

After lurking for a couple of months and shoppig as hard as I could on the web, my wife and I took the plunge and bought a couple of 505s yesterday. We chose the Sony over the Bookeen offering (that I know Harry prefers) because we could physically pick one up and examine it before buying. Having a physical point of sale is something we felt would come into use later when the thing breaks (or I drop it too often). Oh, well, we are Sony 505 folks now.

The readers came with an indicated charge on the battery of over 50%, but we charged them first anyway. I hooked mine to my notebook after installing the library and was asked if I wanted the upgrade. I said yes and all went well. I registered the device and will open an account at the on-line store later today.

So far, so good. I have many e-books in many formats so I began to experiment. RTF and TXT files seem to work without a hitch, but I have some HTML files that won't import into the software. PDFde files are a snap and I couldn't wait to put a live concert I have by the Oscar Peterson Trio on for a listen. Great sould through my Sony headphones.

Although I have only had the unit a day, I am pleased to join those of you that read e-ink devices. My wife really thought the page flicker would be a distraction, but adapted to it without noticing! I did as well. I have learned to avoid using a chip for books if possible because all tasks work more readily if loaded into the memory on the device.

I have to go now and find a million questions that I know I will find help with here on the best forum in the land. Thanks to all posters that helped us make our decision. We look forward to many years of enjoying our Sonys.

Congratulations and Happy Reading!

I'm curious. Did you both get the same color or different?

She got the blue, I took the silver. Neither of us wanted the red.

Try Calibre for the HTML files.

Welcome. Stay happy. Don't get distracted or disturbed by poor commercial content offerings, like I do. The device is wonderful, does everything it is supposed to do, and there are PLENTY of books available to read.

Calibre is awesome for automatic conversion, but sometimes you need to do some manual adjustments to the book before conversion. And for that task, nothing beats Book Desinger.

Count on it, Slayda. My wife and I are looking forward to seeing you all. I feel like I could show the evolution of the ebook reader with our Rocket ebook, ebookwise reader (1150), various handhelds, and now the Sony 505s. I don't even care that these will be old news within a year, that's just life.
