Question about custom metadata - 'awards won'

I would like to be able to see a list of awards a book has won displayed in its metadata.

Specifically, in Calibre, in the right hand pane, there is the book cover, and under that, metadata:

Authors:	Herman Melville
Formats:	AZW3, EPUB
Ids:	Goodreads, Google, 9781612190778
Tags:	Classics
Path:	Click to open
Rating:	????
Formats:	AZW3,EPUB
Pages:	34

In Preferences->Look and Feel->Book Details, select the Awards column and position as required



And you'll get something like this

Due to slight variations in spelling and/or punctuation of Author and/or Title, you need a tool that can do a fuzzy search based on similarity percentage. The above link is to a tool that does that, and its Original Post explains in depth how to use it. The explanation references using Tags for Book Awards, but you could use a dedicated Custom Column instead if you wished. Remember that a single book can have many Book Awards, so your Custom Column must be "Tag-Like" to enable multiple values for the same book.

If I recall correctly, the Book Awards Table in the link currently has about 4,200 Book Award combinations. I last updated it in February 2016 for all awards ever granted as of that date.

I have followed your instructions but the field is blank even after metadata update. I am using Goodreads and Barnes & Noble plus the default scrapers. How do I get the new column to populate? (I note that yours has. How did you get that to work?)

You will have to supply the data. In my example I entered 'Man Booker', 'Miles Franklin' and 'Prix Goncourt'. I don't know of any simple way to auto download them.

You may be able to make use of the Import List plugin's ability to scrape data off of websites such as Amazon and Goodreads.

External sources often get awards wrong. One very known source had Hilary Mantel's Beyond Black down as having won the Man Booker, but it wasn't even nominated! And the same site neglected to mention that Mantel has indeed won the Booker Prize -- twice, with Wolf Hall, and Bring Up the Bodies.

Actually it was longlisted (Beyond Black) in 2005.

I can't think of a single really totally reliable source, but http://thegreatestbooks.org/lists/details, starting at the bottom of that page, is pretty good, since it's a labour of love by one dude.

I stand corrected, although I suspect in this context most folks would interpret the word 'nominated' as meaning short listed. But I guess it could also mean 'submitted', which is a longer list (hundreds) than the so-called long-list (a dozen or thereabouts) :lol:

IMO that site is heavily biased to the North Atlantic and especially US/UK, where most people don't actually live. And I question the legitimacy of ranking yearly awards alongside "the greatest of all time" lists.

Ah yeah, the site itself is intended to distil all the various "best books ever" lists that newspapers and the like make, into one epic "Really and truly all the best books" lists. Which is a thing the guy who made it wanted to do, not something I would personally find very useful.

But it just so happens, it's one of the few places that also has a fairly complete and generally up to date list of several of the major literary awards that you can get at all on one page, and with all the categories (I didn't even realise how many categories half those awards had, actually.)

Unlike say, the Booker site itself where you have to dig through pages and pages to find each year's list, and there's way too much pretty graphics to copy and paste into a spreadsheet or Calibre.

There are probably others, but that's a decent place to start if you're after the internationally prestigious giant awards. (For sci-fi, I'd hit up sfdb and https://www.worldswithoutend.com/books.asp first though.) In any case, a lot of those award-giving-organisations make getting a clean list of winners ridiculously hard, and I have no idea why.
