Kobo - User interface translation

Hi!

I'm going to translate Kobo UI to Russian, but I can't find where the translation files are located?

I am only guessing: they strings (english and other languages) could be zlib compressed in libnickel. They would start with 78 9C. A tool that extracts those strings would be very welcomed also by those who want to make their own patch files for the kobo patcher. (since 2.8.1 the css directives are also zlib compressed).

Thanks! This is a good start point.

Did you made some progress? In case you did not yet look yourself, I can give you some information. The lzib blocks containing the UI language strings are in nickel. They start (in FW 2.8.1) at

42B5D
5E07C
783EA
93986
B6350
D181B
ED305
10836D
123A98

For instance, D181B contains the FR language strings , ED305 IT, 42B5D DE, 5E07C NL.

Kobo should not store the GUI language strings in libnickel but in seperate language files. Easier to maintain, fix and/or update.
And if Kobo also published a language file containing the original English text strings I'm sure that the community would pick it up very fast and translate the GUI in virtual every other existing Latin alphabeth based language. For free. And when Kobo decides to officially support a language all they have to do is to check it and ad the appropriate warranty/copyright/etc. notices.Which is certainly much cheaper than a "full" translation.
An another benefit would be that errors/typos in existing translations would be fixed much quicker too. If fixed at all.

Thanks, tshering! I wanted to estimate the effort of translation. But now I see that I have no time for that...

Hello!

I just bought a Kobo Aura H2O for present and I'm a bit sad that there is no gui translation for my language (Hungarian).
I would like to make a translation for it if that is possible.

Does anyone played with the original GUI language strings?

As far as I digged the forums, it should be in the libnickel file. Unfortunately I'm not that good in Linux, I'm using Windows mainly. Is there any (probably easy) way to extract the contents of the libnickel.so.1.0.0, edit them, and repack?

I'm thinking of the way patches are done for it, but I have to extract first to write the translation patch.

So if anyone has any help for this, I would be glad for it!
