No disc issue opening epubs

I have recently installed the latest version of Calibre and I loaded some e-book, that are .pdf and .epub only.
Where with .pdf files Calibre works perfect, it doesn't with epub ones.
Whenever I try to open an epub file I get an error message about:
"Calibre-Parallel.exe - no disc"
What did I do wrong?
Gbegno.

That's an error from windows, not calibre, so it wont have a copy to clipboard button. I have never been able to track down te cause for it. But generally, speaking most likely it is caused by something in the windows registry being screwed up.

Hello if this can be of any help to someone ... this seems to me to be a specific Calibre issue.
I did downgrade to an older Calibre rel. (v2.20.0, I had that one available right now), I did a PC reboot and that one works!
It would be nice install new releases one by one, in order to understand which is the first mistaken one.

They're at ==>> Download older versions of calibre?

That link is also on the download pages at calibre-ebook.com, and in the 'New to Calibre' sticky at the top this forum.

Well I feel like a dog in the middle of the sea ... actually I tried some different releases that doesn't work and finally decided to go back to the 2.20 again and I discover that right now it doesn't work any more that one too.

I noticed that pushing, more or les, 50 times the button "continue", at the end i can open the epub that will be shown...

@gbegno - based on the tone of Kovid's response I would guess this very rare issue has been around for a long time. And by going all the way back to 2.20 and finding the problems is still there, you've confirmed it's a condition peculiar to your system

Try a lightweight registry cleaner, I favour Piriform's CCleaner, I've been using for at least a decade and it has never cause me any grief, whereas some of the others can create more problems than they cure.

If that doesn't fix it you could try running the System File Checker

You could also try installing the Portable version.

I usually avoid the use of tools for the registry maintenance, nevertheless this time I tried CCleaner and it worked.

Wise man. But it was Kovid's post that gave me the hint to suggest CCleaner.

Glad to help, and thanks for getting back to us, knowing how to fix an obscure problem is sometimes more useful than knowing what caused it

Good luck - BR
