Alright. So this is my first post here. I'm sort of new to linux.
Anyways, I have a Kindle 3 US with 3G and wifi. I got the device for free from a store, and the device was still signed in to, and had books on it. I signed out first thing, but I didn't factory reset the device, and I was stupid enough to not make any backups of the "base-us" and "us" folders. ![]() I then got inspired to install Debian on the kindle. I tried a ton of different versions of it, then tried to find a Ubuntu Jaunty ftp dist repo, with no luck. I turned back to Debian. I used this command to copy over the debian.ext3 file over to my kindle's "base-us" directory, but ran out of space. I then deleted the "debian.ext3" file, and was like, "wait, can't I delete the '/mnt/debian' folder, too?" I then proceeded to delete the folder, COMPLETELY forgetting to unmount them. After that point, I'm not sure exactly what happened, but something happened to cause me to want to factory reset the kindle, which I then did. The kindle got stuck on the "Please wait while your kindle starts up screen." I waited, without any results, and then put the kindle into recovery mode. Nothing was on the screen at that point, except for the factory reset option. I chose that, and the kindle rebooted back to the normal screen. And all of the books that were left there by the previous owner were gone. First thing I did was put the device into debug mode, and run the ~help search command. I noticed the ~usbNetwork command was still in the list, so I concluded that the device still had those installed. I ran the ~usbNetwork command, and then plugged the device in, but nothing happened. I noticed Kiterm still worked at that point, and navigated to "/mnt/us" to check to see if some files (Kiterm's, the Jailbreak's, and usbNetwork's) were left over there: They weren't. I downloaded the source code for the Jailbreak and usbNetwork, and stuck the "linkjail," "extensions," and "usbnet" folders from the source to the kindle via normal usb storage. I also copied the contents of "extensions" to "usbnet," just in case. Tried to uninstall them using the *.bin uninstall files (one by one, not at once.): uninstall failed. Restarted and now Kiterm will not start. (So no terminal access now.) This is already extremely long, but anyways: tl;dr, usbNetwork 0.57.N and the k3g Jailbreak 0.13.N don't want to uninstall and are missing folders. How can I recover from this? Thanks in advance. ------------------------------ Also, for when I do get my kindle back to functioning order, does anyone have a ext3 debian linux os file that will work on Kindle V3.4.2? ![]() Last edited by TheWaffleDimensi; 11-08-2016 at 10:37 PM. Error path: 'I want to install Debian on my Kindle' - Failed to first check if there was room on the system partition for Debian. There isn't. Tried to install it anyway. Game over. But not satisfied with that, continued to spend time just to ensure that the firmware installation was totally destroyed. Solution: Learn to follow directions, exactly, none of the 'that is what I was told (by the directions) to do, but I would rather have it like this. ?? Why isn't it working ?? Nobody here has time for that kind of sh.. IF what the poster is calling a "Kindle 3" is what we call a K3, then: So step one, identify the Kindle model. Since everything here is indexed by model. See: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers and then start over: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=206064 Once you have restore both of the Amazon systems that where installed on the device, then follow the link given in the post above. |

----------------------- EDIT: And sorry if I come off as arrogant, but you came off as arrogant to me. And the kindle works fine, but I'll do the debricking CD anyways. I'll be back if it works. Last edited by TheWaffleDimensi; 11-09-2016 at 01:56 PM. |

The info box stuff has been made unreliable. The answer is the same, start over by using Kubrick on it. |

![]() ANYWAYS, back to the subject at hand, I ran Kubrick on the K3g (twice), and usbNetwork still shows in the ~help list, even after another factory reset. usbNetwork also will not uninstall, nor function. Last edited by TheWaffleDimensi; 11-17-2016 at 07:38 PM. |

Not sure if anyone has any answers, but the title of this thread isn't really relevant anymore.
So here's all the info so far:
So yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated. ![]() Last edited by TheWaffleDimensi; 11-25-2016 at 12:35 PM. Reason: Forgot to remove the quote. |

Sorry, but your kindle is beyond help.
If you can still read it on it, that is good. If not then I recommend a new kindle. |

Couldn't I theoretically flash firmware to the device after opening it up or boot off a "boot" terminal thing inside the kindle itself after wiring something up to it? Those were just some ideas I had, so I'm not sure if they would work. Anything I could do at this point that would give me some chance, since it's already screwed. I'm not going to use it for reading, I just want to experiment. :P And one quick question, since I have the US "free" 3G model of the K3, couldn't I theoretically get free data after taking the modules for that out? Anyways, thanks for your time and help. Worst comes to worst, I'll just get a slightly newer model that can support most of the stuff on here. ![]() |

Well now I am cheap so I would just get a basic kindle.
If you want to be really cheap, call or visit your local pawn shops and see if they have any there. You might get a really good deal. |
