water proofing of aura one
Got myself an aura one, to replace my h2o. I know the aura is waterproof without covers but what seems a little worrying is that when the backlight is on I can see some light spill through the micro USB port. Is that normal? Or is my water proofing compromised?

That's normal. Think of the waterproofing on the Aura One as being like a coat of paint over all the internal bits and pieces to waterproof them. Water can safely get into the device and do no harm. The H2O is built like a waterproof bag around the water sensitive internal parts. If water actually gets inside the H2O it could cause issues.

The waterproofing for the Aura ONE is done in a completely different way. Instead of sealing the case, they have coated all the electronics with something to protect them from water.
Edit: to slow! |

Ta for that ! wasn't sure if that was the case but had to be sure. Didn't want to have to play a weird form of Russian roulette to check!
Many thanks |

This is also why Aura ON doesn't have removable internal uSD card or external uSD card.

Allowing water to get inside the case sounds like a recipe for trouble, to me. I really don't know, but it sounds very strange. |

They probably only coat the exposed parts like the USB port. The rest is sealed. I'd think coating everything would be difficult and expensive.

Nope, it's the circuit board and stuff inside that's coated with a waterproofing, the case itself is not sealed at all. It's using a process from HZO. To quote from their website describing how it works:
"Rather than keep water away from the sensitive components of a device by trying to keep water out, HZO’s technology allows for full liquid ingress, protecting electronics from not only accidental drips and splashes, but also against full and extended submersion. That’s because our thin film nanocoating creates a pinhole free barrier that is applied directly to the sensitive circuitry, making electronics resistant to corrosion and damage caused by liquids and humidity, as well as providing a barrier that protects against dust, debris and other particle contaminants." |

How long do I have to wait before I can charge/connect the device if it's wet? Surely you can't charge it if it's wet? I think the insides stay wet for a quite a while and I'm not too sure about the USB port. It's very hard to dry it with a paper towel since the opening is so small. I imagine it takes at least 2 hours for the socket to dry completely.

I recharged mine ten mins after a dunk. My guess is the coating is also hydrophobic as well

Robko, thank you for setting me straight.
That sounds very promising; open it up (say to change the battery) and close it again and it is still waterproof. |
