RIP Sheri! I'll remember her for The Enigma Score, Beauty and Shadow’s End.

Never heard of her before. I stuck mostly to the older classic writers like Clarke and Asimov.

What if all the Beauty in the world exists and we're the ones sleeping?

She also wrote crime/mystery under a couple of pseudonyms - B J Oliphant and A J Orde. I read the series authored as A J Order and enjoyed them.
I can't ever remember reading any of her fantasy works, but perhaps now is the time to try. |

I read 3 or 4 of her books back in the 90s, including Beauty and Grass, which was nominated for a Hugo. I didn't realize she was that old.
Here's John Scalzi's tribute. http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/10/2...sherri-tepper/ |

Of her books I've read so far I liked most of them, she could turn unlikely or even quite outrageous ideas into a good story.

Just coincidentally I happen to be reading the Northshore/Southshore duo. I am halfway through and she really did a good job writing from small scale to large scale events while avoiding infodumps. I feel like she is making me work a little more than usual as a reader, extrapolating from what we know, but I like that.
The 'world building' is superb. I imagine others might pick apart certain details but I really like the sense of constant exploration with the gentle pace she reveals this fantasy world to us. As soon as you think you know one faction, race, or societal feature reasonably well she moves on to another by changing the POV in rational yet unanticipated directions. |
