using WiFi for side loading of books
I have now WiFi off all the time.Main reason is that I do not want any updates from Amazon. I am happy as my PW is now.
I load all books using USB connection from Calibre. I like to use KoReader and load and sync over WiFi. Would it be required to de-register Kindle from Amazon to avoid anything be pushed from Amazon? Would it be 100% workable solution? Thank you for your kind answer. |

All of my internet is wired (using home plugs) so I've had my Kindle in aeroplane mode since purchase. The kindle (paperwhite) itself remains unregistered, but I had a telephone conversation with an Amazon person soon after purchase. They registered the kindle at their end so that I can buy and download books for it (transferred via usb) and they explained how to do the transfer. I didn't need to have the kindle itself registered at my end.
Certain functions don't work if you're in non wifi mode: the vocabulary builder, x-ray, wikipedia search, translation, collections, synch. The dictionary and search still work and all other BASIC functions. Naturally, it can't connect to the internet in any way. I suggest that you contact Amazon. I doubt that you need to de-register your kindle, just make sure that when you download a book from Amazon you choose the 'transfer via usb' option in the drop down bar (on the book's Amazon page), then when it asks which device you want it for (during the purchase process) pick the name of your kindle. A message box will appear asking you to save the book, press ok, then it'll download onto your computer (all my downloads go to the desktop). For a mobi etc book, you don't really need Calibre, unless you create Collections there. Just stick the usb lead into your kindle and computer, go to 'my computer' find 'kindle' then open this. Open the 'documents' you'll see in the kindle box, then slide the book into there. Close down the kindle box (click X), then eject the kindle from your pc. Leave the usb attached if you need to charge your ereader, or just pull it out if you're finished. Here endeth the lesson! ![]() |

@BookCat, thank you for the lesson ;-)
I think I didn't write really clear what I wanted to ask. I have PW for rather some years. I want to avoid firmware updates and book pushed to my over the WiFi. I like however use Koreader to load my books from calibre over wifi. Or some other sync options I am working on over the wifi. Question was will de registering of my Kindle PW from Amazon be sufficient for avoiding those firmware upgrades? Thanks |

I believe there's a method of blocking Amazon updates while still allowing WiFi to be used. Ask for details on the dev forum.

Jailbroken Kindle owners may configure the internal firewall.
You may have a Wifi router which allows to block internet access for devices based on the MAC address. |

I always use wifi for sideloading books, because my Kindle can not connect to PC with USB.
To prevent OTA updates, follow these steps: (from this post —> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=275877) add the OTA blocker directory (folder) name to the top level of visible USB storage. The blocker directory is named: update.bin.tmp.partial Use that exact name, no additional extension, no contents. I've never got OTA updates using this little trick though I always leave WiFi on, and it should work for you. |

Thank you @evianluw for the tip.

Do you know if creating that folder will also avoid OTA updates? |

Sorry, I don't know for sure. I guess it's the same, but no guarantee
