I think you also have to keep the time frame in mind. Today 1,200 books may not seem like a lot but back in Washington's day it probably was. I mean Louis XIV had a large library for his time (24 books) so I can see that 1,200 book library of George Washington's being considered large for the time.

Can't compare to Karl Lagerfeld!

My complete library as on date goes to 5142 books. 3641 books in e book format, and
1501 print books/ manuscripts. This also includes books/manuscripts I inherited from my father. To respect my laziness, we are not talking about my TBR.
