Aura One Wackiness

The sideloaded book I was reading kept reverting back to a the same previous location after coming out of sleep, none of the highlights beyond that particular location were being saved.

I decide to power off (holding the button) and when I turn it back on, all of the book covers on the main page are blank and inaccessible. Then it reboots on its own, and goes through the setup again.
I'm thinking I'm getting an update. Not the case.
The books are all back now but all of my highlights have disappeared.

This is my first Kobo reader; is this how it's going to be with Kobo?

Pretty much yes.. Expect the reader to work sufficiently in 1-2 years (or rather, expect it to work ok after one update or two, then to be buggy as hell again after another couple of updates, then finally be *almost* stable and working as adverstised).

The symptoms suggest that the database on the device was corrupted. The database is used to store details of the books, reading status and annotations as well as the users details. Depending on exactly what is wrong with the database, the device can continue OK, or, in the extreme case, need to reset and start again.

How this happened, I don't really know. The only way that I know can do it is not safely ejecting the device from the PC. One problem is that it can take a while to see the effects. The device will run using date in memory, and keep running but not successfully updating the database. Then, at a restart, the database is read and it is either an old copy of the data, or bad enough to trigger the setup.

Is it going to be like this? I don't think so. Across my four devices, I've seen a corrupt database twice this year. And I know what I did both times. I do take backups of the database just in case, but I have rarely needed to use them.

Not mine either. A few minor hiccups, but that's about it.

Thank you and on that, I have been ejecting the device via Calibre rather than Windows.

Everything looks to be in order once I have ejected. The black screen goes away, I get the home screen, etc. I did forget to mention that the device date was stuck on Oct 2nd. I didn't think about it at the time because I seldom pay attention to what day it is...

You don't suppose ejecting from Calibre may be bad voodoo?

Except for an old combination of calibre and the device firmware, I have never had a problem ejecting using calibre. Calibre makes sure there are no device jobs running and then gets the OS to do the eject. It doesn't force the eject, so it should be clean.

The date getting stuck is weird. If the clock is out by too much, syncing to the Kobo server will fail. I could see that also causing a problem updating the database.

Can you have a look in the .kobo directory on the device? Depending on what went wrong, there might be a log that could give a clue of what failed. The file name will look like "stack_nn.log". If there is one, it can be supplied to Kobo to help to solve the problem.

My Aura never did anything less than working flawlessly right out if the box.

And even though I seem to complain a lot right now, other than the poor battery life, the Aura One is one prime piece of kit and one of the best readers I ever had (the other one was my Sony-PRS 650). I expect this to be solved by an update.

So what's it with you and the bitterness? You sound like a spurned lover...

since there is a thread appropriately named for my problem, I shall join in. though my problem seems to be more HW related than SW.
I have noticed a strange behavior that I have been able to replicate only on one laptop successfully, but the laptop is 6 months old (Asus F205TA) and I never experienced any problems on it regarding ports or otherwise. sometimes when I plug in my KA1, the laptop shuts down completely and I cannot turn in on when KA1 is plugged in. this happens multiple times, when plugged in again. sometimes I also cannot turn it on (laptop) after KA1 was unplugged, but this lasts seconds (20 tops).
Has anyone experienced anything similar with their KA1? I am now running KSM + koreader on it, the same thing happens and it happened even before tinkering with the SW (when I was using "stock nickel OS")
I am trying to pinpoint the problem, but dont know how to proceed. I dont want to damage my brand new very expensive e-reader.

@hkckoo does it not happen with a powered usb hub in between, then it may be the KA1 is pulling too much power (or at least laptop thinks so and blows a fuse). but in that case you might see the same effect with usb hdd ...

But that's what people come to forums to discuss. No one (well, almost no one) joins a forum to talk about how great their reader is.

I have owned several different models of kobo, and I have found them to be very reliable. I love my Kobo one. I have about 6 readers from several other companies including the kindle but me favorite is by far kobo one.
