Calibre manual says "Kobo has very buggy firmware"

This may explain why some folks have issues with connecting their Kobo to their computer while others don't.

From

https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq...-touch-glo-etc

I am getting an error when I try to use calibre with my Kobo Touch/Glo/etc.?

The Kobo has very buggy firmware. Connecting to it has been known to fail at random. Certain combinations of motherboard, USB ports/cables/hubs can exacerbate this tendency to fail. If you are getting an error when connecting to your touch with calibre try the following, each of which has solved the problem for some calibre users.

I don't know exactly when Kovid Goyal write it, but I guess it was a few years ago, specialy that he mention Windows XP and Kobo Touch, I didn't have any connecting problems.

That's old information that's out-of-date. I've connected my H2O to 11 different computers (desktops/laptops) including a Surface Pro 2. Never once did I have a problem connecting.

Definately old information and only an opinion by a 3rd party who is not affiliated with kobo at time.

Because a first party (aka Kobo) would write that of their product?
I guess Kovid’s just “holding it wrong” too...
This kinda reflects my experience with my H2O, and yes, “Kobo has very buggy firmware”, in every respect...

After having been through that particular bug with my Kobo Glo readers on an AMD 64-bit Windows 7 machine, I think the warning should remain. I can definitely say it was not a Calibre issue, but a Kobo issue, since Windows Explorer also wouldn't work. My fix was downgrading to a much older firmware on the reader and staying with it for over a year.

The warning is valid since it seems to affect people and readers randomly. Just because it hasn't affected you doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

If you are getting an error when connecting to your touch with calibre try the following, each of which has solved the problem for some calibre users.
What exactly does the error say?
And exactly which device are you using?
And what OS on your windows?
Is it Calibre or your computer that isn't seeing the kobo?

That is the information we need to help you.
We do not need at least a 3 year old copy and paste opinion from a website. Unless that is the error that calibre gave you.

Seriously,
Give us the information needed and maybe we can find a solution.

Alternatives to quoting from an old Calibre FAQ:

They need an updated USB driver -- that was fun in the Windows XP days with AMD motherboards and some Intel motherboards. There have also been issues with some computers with Windows 7 and drivers.

They might own a Mac computer -- see the number of issues with connecting a Kobo ereader to a Mac. Quite often it seemed to happen after a Mac OS X update and they had to wait for the next update to fix the fix.

They might have a flaky USB cable -- I've seen enough cable issues with almost every USB connected device. It's been enough to convince me that penny wise and pound foolish definitely applies to purchasing USB cables.

They might have an early USB 3.0 chipset which could cause issues with connecting -- prior to Intel building USB 3.0 support into their chipsets, I saw multiple issues with ASMedia and Etron USB 3.0 implementations.

Given that you list a Kobo Aura One as your device, you might want to remember the recent debacle with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update which wouldn't connect to Kobo ereaders until 3 update cycles after it's release. Yes, I know there was a workaround for this issue but, IMNSHO, not something that most people would feel comfortable with implementing.

As much as I don't like the first sentence, I can't really disagree with the FAQ. It is a more related to the original Touch, but the advice for problems are still largely valid.

It would probably be a good idea if it was rewritten to better reflect the latest state. Anyone want to try?

I wish I could say the same for my Kobo, which I've only had a few days. (I still love it, though - I just hope Kobo are one of those companies who are responsive to bug reports, as opposed to some who congratulate themselves for ever more esoteric bells and whistles whilst leaving basic problems unsolved.)

I have an H2O and I do not find the current firmware for it to be very buggy.

So are you holding your Reader wrong and that's why you find it very buggy?

Once of the machines I've used with my H2O has been an AMD 64-bit Windows 7 system. And again, I'll say there's been no issue connecting it the computer via USB.

The Kobo used to have very buggy firmware. Connecting an old model Kobo (Kobo Touch or earlier) with old firmware to the USB of your computer has been known to fail at random. Certain combinations of motherboard, USB ports/cables/hubs can exacerbate this tendency to fail. If you are getting an error when connecting with Calibre try the following, each of which has solved the problem for some Calibre users.

How's that?
